if you are new, grab a fortress and a medic and the rest is all you. theres 2 ways to start out a fortress, provoke or front/party guards

Whatever you go with, just know that grinding won't make you better. Your skills all have uses, all enemies are susceptible to enfeebling abilities that bind limbs, silence them from casting spells, etc. Also defeating most enemies specific ways results in drops that will unlock more gear you can craft at the blacksmith.

I can't remember class names, but you can't go wrong with having a dancer, healer and that spell caster.

Just pick something you think is fun. Experiment a bit with the various classes to see what works well together and which skills synergize well.

Just remember that binds and status effects are always worth using, unless you want to get your face mashed in.

it wasn't really me being lazy. it was that there arent enough icon options for me to draw maps accurately. they're enough for me when im currently in the dungeon but when i come back to it after a while to kill certain monsters the maps i drew look foreign as hell because I don't instantly remember what the icons and numbers i left meant

For a beginner, you should have a tank, two attackers, a binder, and a healer. In that regard, your choices are as follows (classes you unlock later in spoilers).
>Tank: Fortress
>Attackers: Landsknecht, Nightseeker, Runemaster, Bushi, Imperial
>Binders: Sniper, Arcanist
>Healers: Medic, Dancer
If these seems kind of rigid, do remember that you'll unlock subclassing later, letting you adjust your party more to your style.

Unless you're doing memebuilds like 5 Nightseekers it's pretty hard to make it unwinnable. Most classes fulfil several roles, even if not as efficient as a class dedicated to them.

EOU (Millennium Girl) is a remake of the first game. It's classes are all straight-forward, and it has pretty classic level design and bosses. It's a great game for beginners to the series... for the most part. Untold was the first game in the series to include a Story mode, which annoyingly forces you to play with a preset team of characters. While Classic mode is still included, there's certain elements that you can't access (namely, two new classes and an entire dungeon). In addition, the Grimoire system, which lets you give skills to characters who normally can't get them, is fucking awful.

EOU2 (Fafnir Knight) is another remake, this time of the second game. All the classes of Untold are here, as well as some new ones (and the returning classes have been revamped). Like with Untold, there's a Story mode, but most of the new content is accessible in Classic mode as well (except for the MC-only class, but whatever). They even made the Grimoire system not terrible. However, it's much harder than EOU, so it's not that recommended for beginners. Also, DLC. Lots and lots of DLC.

EO4 (Legends of the Titan) is the 4th game in the series, but it came out before the Untold games. It has completely different classes, it doesn't have a Story mode, and it has an Overworld to explore in an airship. Instead of Grimoires, there's a Subclass system to give some variance to your party's skills. It's an ideal place for beginners, but it lacks some of the traits the rest of the series share (namely, a single large interconnected dungeon).

They all have cute lolis, and they all have pretty good gameplay. I'd personally recommend getting either EO4, or EOU (first playthrough on Classic).

EO4 is the entry tier EO for its accessibility and difficulty. The "Dark Souls of DS games" memes are referring to its previous entries which are pretty unforgiving, or the Untold games on the difficulty setting that is an attempt to recreate the difficulty from the older games. EO4 is the safest EO

This is good advice. Levels in Etrian Odyssey don't matter that much. Most of your power comes from equipment. Also yeah, all enemies (including bosses) are vulnerable to status ailments and binds. Abuse them to your heart's content.

Playing EOIV right now. Are Land's elemental links any good? I'm afraid I might be too dumb to coordinate my team to get the most out of them.

They're alright if you build around them. They're not the greatest source of elemental damage but if you don't have a Runemaster they're okay.

Use Vanguard or a dancer's Quick Step to act first, then use multi-hitting attacks to trigger the links. If you have a Sniper, Squall Volley is great for this (just make sure to leg bind or paralyse the enemy first so it all hits).

Also if you're looking to maximise damage on it, don't bother with elemental damage forges - it's based off the damage of the initial hit, so go with Attack forges.

Links are the biggest damage dealers in the whole game if built right. They take a while to get going, though, so don't be afraid to skip them for your first levels.

Now if you want to abuse Links, you'll need enablers. Good link enablers are

At some point you want to retire your party anyways and you can catch up really easily just using a couple of high level chars to boost your new members. It's never a big deal in EO imo. Especially in 4 where so many party makeups work (but you generally want to build toward a damage synergy like binds or links, just so it's more fun).

It's not that difficult, you just buff up with Vanguard first then Improved Link (because it has a shorter duration), then have your Land use a Burst Skill to activate their Class Skill, which buffs the damage on your initial link since the Burst Skill always goes first.

The main problems I ran into using links were getting interrupted by status effects and needing healing. If you think you're going to get arm bound, you may want to blindly use something that removes binds on your Land so they don't lose a turn.

If your class focuses on doing damage, you'll want them to subclass bushi. No exception.

A lot of classes benefit from Bushi as a subclass, but other than being self-sufficient, they don't have much going for them otherwise.

Subclasses that looked good for them to me when teambuilding were Bushi/Fortress (for a party without a Fortress main), and Bushi/Nightseeker (charged Shadow Bite is only slightly weaker than Nightseeker/Bushi, double auto attacks)

I used Runemaster/Imperial, (scruffy)Medic/Arcanist, Bandana/Bushi, Fortress/Dancer and Dancer/Nightseeker. (Those slashes are subclasses which you get later)

People say you should run Arcanist/Medic instead but scruffy can work just fine if you want him too. At least he did for me most of the time.

Once you unluck the Samurai/Shogun class or whatever, go with a Warrior's Might party. It completely fucks the game up.

Otherwise I'm struggling to remember. Binds and Status effects kind of suck in 3.

You're gonna get wrecked earlygame no matter what you do but you'll want something with a Monk, Ninja and Hoplite, the rest are whatever.

Eventually you'll unlock subclassing. Then you'll want to go Monk/Princess, Ninja/Zodiac and Hoplite/Ninja.

Later on you'll unlock Shogun, after which point you'll want to drop your whole party and use nothing but Shoguns. Then you've won the game.

I honestly can't remember, its been ages since I played. But its nice to have some utility options to keep your damage rolling, like Tribal Drums or protecting certain characters from getting shot.
