The devs probably lost interest in it long since. They clearly liked to make Starbound at first and were trying to make good so badly, but then people started bitching that the game was never gonna come out of early access, and they had to rush 1.0. That's probably the point where they just stopped trying to fulfill their vision and now they just try to keep people playing that shit game by adding new terrible minigames that keep you entertained for 10 minutes or so, but the game cycle is so shit that it's unenjoyable.

There are quite a few cases of this, though the actual amount has been shrinking drastically.

Old assets tend to look pretty chunky, muted, and simple in contrast to newer ones, which are more colorful, complex, and professional-looking. Some older bits of content, like regular wood furniture, bombs, etc. are guilty of this.

But then again, Terraria's been doing lots of art updates, to the point where pretty much every patch gives art makeovers to old content. So whatever.

I like terraria alot. Starbound is just awful. If you've played terraria you know how deep and content dense a world can be. Now imagine a game with an eighth of terraria's content where the devs give you a space ship and let you travel to thousands of recolored planets that are all that same fraction of terraria's content. "Lel it's pretty much infinite content, so epic XD" is the mind set of the devs. It's a game with the breadth of an ocean but the depth of a puddle - just like breath of the wild. And don't even get me started on how they treated their early access supporters.

Just pick a new thing, craft it, and go down the rabbit hole.

Build whatever crafting stations sound neat. Stuff shit into extractors and labs to see what comes out.
Fly around and explore worlds that look cool, so you can find more ores, crops and shit to stuff into your extractor.
Poke around the science outpost a bit, too, and find shit to shoot for.

Did you all know that in the beta, if you walked into a village with your weapon out, guards would ask you to put it away, or they'd attack you? Pretty fun and immersive right? Well for some fucking reason Chucklefish decided to scrap that for NO FUCKING REASON and just make it so you can't hurt neutral NPCs anymore unless you go right into their house and start breaking shit to aggro them, which is really fucking stupid. I know its a little thing but jesus christ this was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Why the fuck would you even do that? It's the perfect example of how fucking stupid Chucklefish is and how they wouldn't recognize good game design if you beat them over the head with it.

Hello fellow non developers I sure do love this game that is entirely stripped of the features that once made it fun, like the varied planet biomes full of random biomes as opposed to the now set biome combinations for worldgen, as well as the tech system which has now been gutted, and the racial differences which have become completely visual, and the lack of any and all engame unlike the former exploration aspect of the X Sector. But most of all, I love how they have managed to transform a sandbox into a linear adventure game with a loose plot, forgettable characters and no real satisfaction behind it's progression. I sure am glad Chucklefish didn't run off with my money and release a half-complete trash game that has somehow become less fun and less playable than the early access version!

I like it as well, the updates aren't happening fast enough and its most certainly not finished. If they'd stop making new trash and fix starbound it could easily beat terraria but at the rate its going it will never surpass terraria before terraria 2 comes out and blows it out of the water its trying to resurface to.
