What did you think of Thief: Deadly Shadows?

I've just finished Thief Gold and The Metal Age, I mostly enjoyed both of them, some of the levels got a bit tedious but the worldbuilding and characters are phenomenal. Father Karras might be my favorite antagonist, ever, even though he doesn't have that much content.

Going to DS has been a rocky transition, though, I really dislike how the game feels, the movement, it's clunkier and less responsive than the first two. The whole tone of the game feels different, too, but maybe that's just me.
>>
>>381337108

Did you get the Sneaky Upgrade patch? It really fixes a whole lot in the game.

Thief 3 is Sneaky Upgrade mega patch is actually a good game.
>>
Your thoughts on the movement/clunk is exactly how I felt when I played Deadly Shadows for the first time after coming off of a Thief 1 & 2 high. Utterly fucking disappointing. Everything is so janky and it just plain feels awful. To make matters worse the movement is also littered with bugs like landing from a jump and being stuck in a sliding state, unable to jump again until you fall from something.

I absolutely HATED Deadly Shadows when I first played it, the memers really overrated the cradle and even if that level was the best thing in the series (protip it's not) it can't ever hope to save the game from the mediocrity that it is.

And then I played Thi4f. Thi4f made me find a new appreciation for Deadly Shadows. If you think the tone of Deadly Shadows feels different from T1/T2 then just wait til you see that shit.
>>
>>381337616
I downloaded that, I enabled everything it came with but it ended up changing the game pretty drastically. For example, instead of difficulty levels, there were these weird options that changed subtle things about the mission, e.g. don't kill anyone, but the combat difficulty and alertness stayed the same. I think that was the "Thief 3 Gold" mod. I could disable that and try with the rest, but for the moment I decided to leave mods for a while and play the main game.

I've progressed a little, got to the first Hammer temple, but I'm not really enjoying it. I'll have to try a different combination of mods.

>>381338051
>To make matters worse the movement is also littered with bugs like landing from a jump and being stuck in a sliding state, unable to jump again until you fall from something.

That happened to me just yesterday.

I don't plan on ever playing Thifourf, but yeah, I guess DS could have been a lot worse.
>>
>>381338330

Mate there is a reason it changes sublte things in the game. The first hammer temple for me was a great mission because the mods really fix almost every bullshit issue with the game.

Install the Sneaky Upgrade and I really recommend installing T3 Gold part of it as well. You don't want to play vanilla. You've already seen how lacklustre the first 2 levels are in vanilla, now install the mods and restart the game before you get to far to want to restart.
>>
I've only played deadly shadows and I loved it. People tell me the first two are better but when I was trying to play the first one it crashed at the end of the tutorial so I just gave up
>>
>>381337108
Stick with it. Movement mechanics are horrible compared to the first games because of the added third-person modebut it has its moments and a few fun levels. T3 Gold at least removes most of the loading screens.
>>
>>381339085
Alright, I'll take your advice, but I don't know about the enemy alertness and combat being set to the highest level. I played through TG/TMA on a mix of Normal and Expert, and the combat seems harder in DS. Why did they replace his sword with a dagger? I suppose it was smart, since unlike in the first 2 I actually want to avoid combat now.
>>
>>381339602

>played 1 and 2 on normal

You should also replay 1 and 2 on expert. Why do people even bother playing Thief if not on expert? All the lower difficultly levels do is lock you off from extra content and objectives. Expert is the only way to play.

And yes, make enemy alertness and combat to highest level. It's not like you will be fighting anyways and the game is mostly easy as fuck. Do you want braindead enemies or a fun and mildly challenging stealth game?

>All the lower difficultly levels do is lock you off from extra content and objectives. Expert is the only way to play.

Yeah, but some missions suck ass and I want them over as soon as possible. Examples include Casing the Joint, Masks, Down in the Bonehoard, the first one with the cathedral in TG, etc.

>Do you want braindead enemies or a fun and mildly challenging stealth game?

I notice that blackjacking is harder than it was in 1 + 2. If enemies suspect you are around, you can't knock them out, even if you sneak up on them. That's nonsense in my book.
>>
The Trickster > Father Karras

The idea of Mother Nature + Satan worked amazingly in 1, even if Karras was more of a threat than Constantine you can't deny the Honeymaker is way better than just a fanatic mechanic.

Also most of the science involving his creations is never explained/makes no sense.

Back in the day i couldnt play it, it required pixel shader 1.0 wich came with newer videocards, and once i found a PC that had an ATI videocard able to play it, it was like 9fps on the lowest settings, and i played when there was already some mods to fix it.
With mods became a decent game.

>no arrow trails
>no loot shining
>no blue lighting when selecting
>UI similar to the 1st game
>AI fixes
>map merge
>old texture pack from back then

Those that play with the difficult are like that, put the guards to its max sensitivity settings, but not forcing you to search for all the loot, that was a major complaint (in maps that small... now compare it to the bonehoard or other maze in the originals) and its why that difficulty mod exist.

Considering that Hammerite/Mechanist priest are able to conjure and shoot flaming hammer/gear projectiles at you, I'm assuming even the technology fanatics still depend on magic. Given this, it's not unreasonable for Karras to develop security cameras and semi-intelligent robots in a world where gramophones and lightbulbs are cutting edge technology.

The Trickster was just your run of the mill malignant deity. Karras was a mortal, who, being a genius mathematician and engineer, single-handedly progressed technology forward centuries - which I don't think is too unrealistic, Da Vinci could probably have done the same thing if it had worked out for him - and built an army of robot servants/soldiers to walk around and talk about how cool he is all day every day. Karras worked far harder than Constantine ever did, and he actually had to earn his way to the top.

Do you think Karras ever gets horny and feels ashamed of himself for being attracted to female flesh? Do you think being caught masturbating as a Mechanist is punishable by death, for engaging in pleasures of the flesh, which is evil? Realistically, how would they deal with this?

It's atmospheric as hell, I can see why would some people not like it but Bonehard is one of my favorite missions in the series
>that soundtrack
>>
>>381342836

Thief 1 isn't a stealth game though. It's an exploration game. Thief 1 literally was not even meant to be a stealth game, it was something that was added in the last few months of development and is only in like 4 levels out of the entire base game.

Thief 2 is a stealth game. Thief 1 is just a theiving grave robbing, tomb raiding spooky sim. If you don't have human enemies in your Thief 1 level don't even bother being sneaky. Much more fun to run around and explore.

Bonehoard is the best Thief level ever made.
>>
I just want a tabletop rpg style sourcebook on The City. It's probably my favorite game setting ever, the games just aren't enough! I've given up hope on ever getting a proper Thief anymore, that kind of games haven't been made since the 90s and that's it.

Replaying Thiefs (again) I kinda wish the loot system in difficulties were impletented into the difficulties in a different way. I like it how they force the player to look into everywhere but also really dislike it when you're missing 20 gold pieces worth of loot and can't seem to find it anywhere. Just the extended unique goals would be fine to me.

Thief 1 does suffer a lot from misleading marketing, all the way to this day. Once you embrace its nature as a surreal semi-horror fantasy adventure, it's great. I think that the sprawling levels add to the atmosphere, it's easy and actually dangerous to get lost in the levels while you're running away from a zombie horde in panic. That's just another aspect of the game that wouldn't fly today.
>>
Thief 3 isn't bad. It was annoying to have the levels broken up into tiny pieces and the movement wasn't great but its a good game overall.

I find it more enjoyable than Thief 1. The atmosphere's great, the level design is great, if slightly hampered by the size, the story's great and fits perfectly as the end of trilogy, and it's full of little details, like the interactions in widow's manor. Open world was not implemented perfectly, but it wasn't obtrusive and again held lots of good little side moments. The engine certainly does feel clunky, but not so clunky it makes game unenjoyable. And come on, Shalebridge cradle is one of the greatest levels ever created.
>>
>>381337108
I loved it although I must admit - not a fan of the explorable city. I played the series right before the most recent Thief came out to prepare for the hype and although it has many flaws, I really liked it even when compared to the first two games. This was my first Thief ever, so I'm sure this weights a lot in my opinion.
Favorite level? The orphanage. Good Lord, how I loved that level, if only it would have taken place during nighttime, although a gloomy, clouded day was way better than a regular sunny summer midday.
>>
>>381344621
I'm half-way through Metal Age now, this is great. Is Dark Mod good?
>>
Sabotage at Soulforge might be my favorite final level in games ever. Putting spoilers because some anons will probably be discovering this series for the first time.

>Viktoria sacrifices herself so you have a fighting chance
>No one else knows what's going on; you're completely alone in this gigantic cathedral, the hub of the bad guys
>Karras immediately begins taunting you over the PA system
>You've got no plan and Karras is about to trigger the servants

Despite there being no actual time-limit, which I think would have made things worse, it was so dramatic and such a brilliant finale. I also really love Karras.

You know what'd be cool? A Thief game with Majoras Mask environment formula. I always enjoy overhearing guards just talk about random shit, but imagine if the game had 1-2 hours worth of say 20 different events happening on location, some tied to your quest, some entirely optional, and depending on the route you take you could only witness maybe a quarter of them.
