Part of it was the natural progression into corporate stores rather than individual shops, same as any other place.
The other part is digital distribution. When you need online access for so many games anyway there's no real reason to care about a physical copy.
Both of these things aren't good or bad. Things just change. Soon enough physical copies will be limited to collector items due to lack of demand and cost saving measures.

There are hundreds of webstores who ship games within 24 hours cheaper than any physical store. Including obscure JRPGs.
