Reminder that FF's world maps were the best in jrpgs and removing them was the beginning of the end for the series.
>>
world maps are cancer af dude
>>
How does the party move so fast on the world map?
>>
What's everyone's favorite map in the series? I'm partial to 9s myself.
>>
Reminder that Final Fantasy sucks dick.
>>
>>381323037
Bottom 3 are god tier.

9
>>
>>381323208
Yeah, 9s map was great, and I'm not even so found of the game myself.
>>
>>381323037
You didn't even post all of them. The best maps were from games with additional maps or evolving maps. 5 was top tier.
>>
>>381323071
Care to explain.
>>
>>381323208
IX
>>
>>381323208
2. I like how you can get to most places after like 30 minutes of gameplay and only thing stopping you is strong monsters.
>>
>>381323037
The Tales series also saw its decline start with the removal of world maps.
>>
>>381323071

>af
>hating on world maps

How old are you?
>>
>>381323037
Spinoff keeps them.

Anyway They slowly remove elements.
>>
>>381323037
I didn't like Ni No Kuni as a game, but i's world map was really good.
>>
>>381323037
holy shit so much this.

I cannot play any of the FFs after IX because they took out the world map and it feels so fucking linear.
>>
>>381323037
Preach on. Fast travel is gay as shit when you have vehicles
>>
>>381328720
At which title did they start removing world maps? The last one I played was legendia and they were still in that one.
>>
>>381323208
I kind of have a bias for 3.
Because the DS remake was my first FF game
>>
>>381330502
It's kind of awesome though that you can travel through the entire world in FFX from the beginning to the end on foot.

The best thing would be a mix of both worlds.
>>
>>381323208
4 or 7
>>
>>381330621
I think vesperia was the last to have one.
>>
>>381323071
How?
>>
>>381323037
>removing them
FFXV has a world map
>>
>>381323037

I miss world maps, and I miss when Square would put out high quality main series FF games every 1.5 to 2 years. Also, the removal of world maps wasn't the only reason why it was downhill after IX. The soundtracks also got much more bland. I do like FFX, but it is, indeed, the beginning of the end.
>>
>>381331696
Where?
>>
>>381323037
It's funny how 2 and 3 have arguably more interesting maps than 4, 5 and 6.
>>
>tfw no full continental Ivalice to explore
>>
>>381323037
Metal Max has better maps.
Besides, world maps are boring shit, they're just glorified minidungeons where nothing fucking happens, especially in FF.
>>
>>381323037
I don't know if they're the best, there are a lot of JRPGs I didn't play, but you're entirely right that removing them was a turn for the worse. I think even Square forgot it served purposes beyond just linking various locations together.

>Final Fantasy IX's map is somewhat similar to Final Fantasy I's
Goddamnit I love IX so much.
>>
>>381323037
>I preferred the mana and chono-triggers maps to FF

Both worlds merging in V was a pretty mind blowing experience.
>>
>>381332076
3 in particular, with the fact that that world map is actually a suspended island kept afloat above the world frozen in time below, and unless I'm mistaken is supposed to be absolutely tiny.
>>
>>381332001
The one you travel with your flying machine.
>>
>>381323037
>2's world is completely connected aside from the small islands
Huh. Neat.

Holy shit I never realized that the world maps are all variants of the earth's continents
>>
>>381323037

Was there really a bridge between the main continents in FF8?
>>
>>381334797
A rail bridge, if I'm not mistaken.
Final Fantasy V also has one
>>
>>381323037
Why does the bottom right map look like Azeroth?
>>
>FF4: 2 maps
>FF5: 3 maps
>FF6: 2 maps
suddenly...
>FF7: 1 map
>FF8: 1 map
>FF9: 1 map
>FF10: 1 menu screen

what went wrong?
>>
>>381334632
Theyre all meant to reflect earth. Onoy few have a name, World A is FF. Earth is used as a name for 4. FF5's world is called planet R.

The rest are called "the world" during the nes, snes days.

FF7 and 9 share the name Gaia. 8 has no name but the world.
>>
>>381334002
DQ maps are literally all the same map.
>>
>>381323037
Some1 really liked triangles in the FF6 team
>>
>>381323037
They all look as if they were made based on fractals.
It hurts to look but functions ok, so I guess. Still looks artificial.
>>
>>381335569
The Moon is way too small to count as a full scale map. It's more like a map and a quarter.
>>
>>381335569
>FF4: 2 maps

It had three, right? Overworld, underworld and moon.

Also, FF7 had the underwater map.
>>
>>381336168
I was counting the underground map.
>>
>>381336215
FFVII is one of the best cases for how a world map enhances a game, if the simple presence of Meteor wasn't enough
>get the submarine
>turn around to dive away from Junon

If underwater maps count, then FF5 had 6 maps.
>>
>>381323037
Seeing how they were all copied from Dragon Quest, I don't know.
>>
>>381338142
>muh dragon quest
Blandest shit maps until DQ IV. Yes, III included.
>>
>>381334002
I've only played DQ1 and 2 but they were pretty good maps. Especially DQ2's.
>>
>>381338360
>Yes, III included.
I mean III's map is just a distorted earth.
>>
>>381335910

Incorrect

VIIIs map is just VIIs map shruken and rotated a lil

Never noticed this.

Good luck finding people who agree OP. This board even defends FFX.

what about a map for underwater when you are in the submarine?
>>
>>381338576
Fuck, it hurts.

Fucking Konami
>>
>>381331314
Yes, the first game without a world map was Symphonia 2 though for budget/rushed development (as usual with this fucking series) reasons IIRC
Then Graces went full retard and decided world map are out and Tales Studio NEVER brings back a mechanic people actually like
>>
World maps are just glorified stage select screens.
>>
>>381337772

That's impressive. Can you list them all? I haven't played it in like 15 years and don't remember that many.

Map thread? Map thread.
>>
Man I tell ya, modern 3d games just can't hope to match the scale of the older titles.

And maybe that's the problem, maybe future games should opt for a smaller more detailed world instead of trying to chase massive scale the much lesser fidelity games had.
>>
>>381327212
This. Walk a few extra steps left from the first area and you're encountering level 25+ monsters.
>>
>>381330670
3 was a great game and had the best maps.
>>
>>381339915
IIRC, 1st world map, 2nd world map, underwater 2nd world map, 3rd world map, underwater 3rd world map. By the end of the game, your airship can switch between air, above water, and underwater; and you have a yellow and black chocobos that can get to places where the airship can't.
