FFVII needed 3 CDs because the devs were retards. You know how in a normal game like Zelda, when Link uses an item, they will just put a model of the item in the Link model's hand? In FFVII they'd use a new model entirely. And they did this for every single character, for every instance that a situation like that popped up. If FFVII was optimized properly it could probably fit in one disc.

How many hardmodes in games over the last two generations have just been numbers increases though? Almost all of them.

Zelda is ranking up the enemies for the hardmode but it also has those random appearance enemies they're adding, ands it's coupled with a ton of new items, the hero's path, and the trial of the sword. It's a significantly better effort than most devs put into the hard difficult for a game thus far.

The combat and shrines were weak, admittedly, but the kind of freedom and world design the game offers is truly unparalleled. Meanwhile SS just kept reusing the same three areas over and over. How?
