TEW also has the advantage of idTech and megatextures.
It makes game file sizes be huge but the trade off is that you can make really nice, varied environments with no evidence of texture tiling.

Look at RE7. They tried to go realistic like it was "found video" and just made the game kinda boring looking. Now take a game like Bloodborne which isn't horror but for sure has been influenced by it and look how memorable the environments were. The TEW is the same way and doesn't look realistic and the environments were designed without the need of logic and just trying to be creepy. Almost like paintings.

They made a lot of good mind bending effects for TEW that worked in-engine. I'm hoping they'll find an excuse to push that stuff more in the sequel during gameplay, like the gravity shifts or altering level geometry.
There's that one fantastic level transition where Seb is falling down a shaft only for it to go horizontal and have him rolling along the ground in a hospital. Doing a transition like that without an obvious load is impressive.

In the beginning you have more stealth sections, making you think it's a horrorsurival game but you'll realize quickly how it's all just an act to make you think you're screwed.
After parts where you had to fight a bunch of enemies you'll run around with low health/ammo but it won't be a problem because you'll find enough until the next locked room where you have to defeat a bunch of enemies.
There are traps you can disarm which gives you scrap, which can be made into crossbow arrows (there are different types, exploding, stunning, etc). There is no limit how much scrap you can carry, making them pauses the game, so there is no drawback either.
It's a TPS with gore and a lot of instantdeaths.
There are shitloads of checkpoints because of all those instandeaths which really cheapens death. You'll stop caring if you live or die really fast and that kinda works against the game trying to be horror/survival/atmospheric

They fixed the letterboxing on every platform and the graphics are pretty good I must say
PS4 version (the one I played) had some technical issues with framerate and models and textures not loading fast enough in some flashbacks
It's a pretty good game overall and you'll definitely like it if you liked games like RE4

I see. I don't really mind gimmick parts in levels as long as they don't get in the way too much of the core gameplay. I'm also not expecting a survival horror game since I've been in a few TEW threads over the years, enough to know that I shouldn't expect that at all. I think I'll be keeping an eye on it. Should I bother with any of the DLC though? There's hardly a description of them on Steam.

I agree with most parts. But it is a psychological horror. And only enemies who can insta-kill you are Guardian, Ruvik and his sister wich are three separate chapters. Real heavy on action stuff kicks in somewhere in chapter 7 and pretty much continues after. I don't really use crossbow much, but the real horror is bomb traps, just because of input delay. And again you'll have shit-ton of parts somewhere midgame. I still think ammo management is a thing and if you are given an opportunity to kill your enemies with traps like in catacombs you will prefer that.

Because you have less armory. The game throws more hoard after you built up you inventory. And most of the other stealth sections are placed after moments where you had to use a lot of ammo. Also Stealth is not even necessary.

If you have low ammo it's the fault of the player when the game tells you to save your ammo or use over means to kill enemies you encounter. You should be saving ammo just between those moments. Just like Old RE did when bosses.

Making doesn't pause the game it slows down time so enemies and bosses that are fast can still kill you and each arrow has unique number to how much parts are necessary to make and traps are a risk reward because disarming them makes can harm you. There are drawbacks but they are balanced.

I think there are more and there are traps/puzzles with instadeaths too. It's not even frustrating (except for spider but that's thanks to the game being a bit buggy), just cheapens the atmosphere.
I played the game for the first time a few months ago and kept playing since I knew that people say that the game gets better the further you get but then I was almost at the end and didn't notice that I got to the atmospheric/horror parts.

The village was my turning point, after that I wasn't really impressed with the game.
Invisible enemies aren't really a threat (I think Amnesia did the whole invisible enemy thing better).
Chapter 9 is good

But you're already saying "look at this chapter and this one". The game has few good parts sure but it can't sustain atmosphere unlike games like Silent Hill. Even within the good chapters there drops regarding the atmosphere

So? The ones that can instant kill don't show up much and instant kills is very common in horror games. REmake, RE4, Outlast, Alien isolation etc.

Stealth is not easy. Enemies can see you pretty with ease and your crouch walk speed is slow to balance out the enemies. Also not to mention that some enemies will turn around if you try sneaking up on them like Ruvik clones.

If you mange it correctly. IF you try to play the game like RE4 or Dead space you will run out fast and it could be awhile until you get more and at most of the time it will be a risk like trying to get ammo during a Boss fight.

Depends on the enemy. If you think you can pull it of with a boss or a ruvik clones or on harder difficulties good luck.
