Linearity says nothing about the quality of the level design, some of the most well made levels are linear. RE4's strength is in how it lays out the arenas you fight in and the encounter design, the buildings all have several different entrances that you have to keep in mind for example, it does a very good job at keeping safe spots to a minimum, encourages movement and makes for some very dynamic fights. It also makes you consider the upsides and downsides if you do decide to camp somewhere because again, the areas have a lot of different entrances which you have to watch.

Apparently you don't know the definition of "endlessly", nor "strategy". I've played through the game probably a dozen times, which is a rarity with me, only because the combat and mechanics are enjoyable moreso than most games of this type, which is why the game is continually engrossing even after all these years. For one, the 2D inventory sprites from the GameCube version are absent in favor of the 3D models from the PC version, and let me tell you, they look like fucking shitty. Literally N64-level shit.
