With mario odyssey on the horizon, was mario galaxy a good or bad game?

I think it was in the VERY first reveal of odyssey, the same place where ARMS and splatoon 2 were shown. They had like a screen with a bunch of the newer mario games and they said that odyssey is going to have a focus on exploration rather than linear gameplay

Odyssey is mainly meant to appeal to the Sunshine crowd, as the collectathon genre has become more popular in the past couple of years (see Yooka-Laylee, Hat in Time demo, Super Lucky's Tale, etc.) Galaxy and its sequel have a different structure for level design, but I'd say that the linear platforming in Galaxy was better than Sunshine's levels.

Sandbox games are more casual than linear, course based games, so your logic makes no sense. This is to appease the 64/Sunshine whiners.`

There is a fair degree of exploration in Galaxy, but the main goal in every Galaxy stage is to find the Launch Star to get to the next planet. In Galaxy, the levels are always designed in a way to lead the player to the next Launch Star in a specific path. In contrast, 64 and Sunshine drop the player at a specific starting point, and force the player to find a star for themselves. As a result, the challenge isn't in the platforming itself, but navigating youself to the right goal.
