Much like Batman Arkham did to the fighting genre of open world, it inadvertently killed all momentum in video games

wisps are a fine powerup gimmick. You could even say eggman captured entire stashes of them during colors and creates new ones as experiments. The problem is that they are now used as one off gimmicks that don't flow well with stages and interrupt the pace of the game like episode 2 Tails combos. Looking at you, Lost World.

People are guessing Labyrinth zone to pull a Hydrocity as it was supposed to be the second stage of Sonic 1. It's just fanwanky enough to be something they would do. I don't think anyone wanted to see Labyrinth zone ever again though. Act 2 would have to steal heavily from Hydrocity and Tidal Tempest to make it interesting and unless they jazz up Act 1 it would be a snore. If any water staged deserved to be brought back, its Hydrocity or Aquatic Ruin.

I'm thinking it has some other gimmick though I'm also holding out for Mystic Cave.

Labyrinth has always been a slow methodical zone and that was it's charm. It was supposed to be a nice change of pace but with the spindash that is just impossible.

The Wii, WiiU, DS, and 3DS all only have the occasional oddball multiplat that's best played or even played equally, but it's almost exclusively inferior ports.
