I find it kind of weird that in-game Raven is an edgy masochist who seems to only enjoy fighting for the pain and has an edgy theme, meanwhile in-story Raven is probably the most level-headed of the entire cast with little to no polarizing emotions and no pants-on-head retarded overarching schemes like literally every single villain in GG has had. Hell in-story he's hardly a villain. Also in-story Raven's theme is Storyteller since he literally is one.

Just a really weird disconnect and I don't know why.

I honestly can't understand how people in this day and age can still watch professional Melee.

The game's been figured out and theory-crafted to the point where optimization is at it's humanly best it can possibly be. The only thing that realy decides fights anymore is either if one of the characters has some form of a hard-counter against the other or in the vast majority of cases where the two characters are on a leveled playing field then it's just who fucks up first.

I find him so boring to play half the time and yet I keep coming back after trying the rest of the cast. He just has a little bit of everything. Range, mobility, setplay, projectiles at multiple angles, goofy animations, command grabs.

I feel guilty for playing him sometimes too because of his ease of use and linear/straightforward gameplan. But I guess if I can start winning I shouldn't complain. I'm still used to the even more braindead Rev1 Raven.

It comes from Arksys characters having a shorter range than you'd think they might, which is doubly jarring when SFV characters tend to have much MORE range than their basic attack animations might suggest.

Keep playing, you'll get the gist of it. Guilty Gear is actually a lot easier to "feel" your way through because there's always a logic and more or less obvious follow-through to attacks. It's much more fun than SFV, in that way I think.

Welcome to GGXrd, here's the shorthand guide I used to introduce my SF friends to GG:

>Start with Sol or Ky, they don't have gimmicks that will confuse you or teach you bad habits

>Pressing two buttons (that don't include Dust) is your focus attack. It costs meter.

>Pressing three buttons (not including Dust) is your Roman Cancel which slows time down. Don't worry about the colors. They just denote whether it's raw or cancelling a move.

>Holding two buttons (not including Dust) while blocking is your Fortress Defense. This drains meter over time, but is used to not take chip damage.

>Burst is any attack button + Dust. This gets you out of combos, but is easily and heavily punished if baited or timed wrong. Use it sparingly.

How does my main deal with Axel? The matchup was already hard enough but the new changes to ghost make it so much harder. It's almost impossible to keep houses out for any meaningful amount of time and one of Axel's DPs is going let him destroy them all and set me back to square one. His range and strong AA game make moving the houses around and getting them behind harder then any character.

He has pretty good pokes, but you can't capitalize on them most of the time unless spaced specifically. He can do super jump IAD loops on standing opponents that go straight into a scroll combo into oki, but the loops don't work on the entire cast. He has pretty safe pressure off of f.S>5H>46p that leaves him neutral enough to press a 5P/6P/2P follow-up if they don't instant block the string, so you have room to reset the pressure or go for a tick-throw. On that note his command grab is really sick, if you dash into the input it actually carries the momentum and you'll go straight to the corner. His 22p counter seems pretty good at first but it forces you to do a vertical divekick that can be blitzed and leaves you in the same position, sometimes you're plus enough to mash 5P afterwards. Most of the time you're going to be struggling for a knockdown and figuring out what to do for oki, also any other character that tends to dominate the mid-range like Axl or Venom are going to be your hardest match-ups.

My general impression of him is that he's one of those characters that takes more work than usual to get to situations that are in his favor, but he's fun and still new so I'm expecting people to discover more potential.

nah, the game is still being pushed by people and I doubt anyone will reach a point where they can't refine any aspect of their game, and thanks to the new 20XX people can mess around even more within melee. KJH is a good example for this, he keeps finding new tech/tricks that I haven't seen used before like a sdi trick that gets you out of a once thought true combo.

>Remove Chipp's corner cross-up. The sheer idea that any character in an already rushdown heavy game can do cross-ups in the corner is actually retarded.
>Make command grabs counterable because a Potemkin YRC into Pot Buster at this time is almost unblockable which is stupid because that single move can easily end the match at any given moment.
>Decrease Zato's drill and Anti-air so it doesn't stretch from the ground to fucking Mars.
>Remove Baiken's counter Anti-air because first off, it's doesn't even need to be countered to be triggered and second off there is no reason that a single person should be "punished" that heavily off of what could be a single P or K too early.

The reveal wasn't that Sol is weaker than Ky, the reveal was that they both hold back for reasons that are important to them.
Sol has access to Dragon Install and 100% of his Gear power all the time, but it's also a one way transformation. DI doesn't run out because he isn't strong enough to use it long, but because DI is actually Sol holding himself between forms and there's a point where he has to either fully transform or cancel the transformation.
Ky was a solider in the Crusades at 15 and all his skills with a sword were meant for killing and nothing else. I actually really like this reveal because it offers some kind of explanation as to why Ky held so tightly to black and white morality when he was younger beyond "Catholicism lol". Considering how brutal the crusades were and how humanity was being hunted down to the point where even minors could serve in the military if they had the skill, I'd make sense for a young Ky to grip to moral binary so at least one thing in his life can be simple. Good people are good, bad people are bad. Don't think about it, just kill.

Don't use baiken gun too much

Your best tool to check opponent from rushing down is aerial tatami gaeshi and her normal. Also, use your guard cancel to check opponent rush down and button. After 1-2 guard, the opponent will get warry of your option and respect it. I'm not sure myself but I think the dash can armor one attack. I could be wrong

Millia's entire gimmick is that she's a goddess in the air but the second she comes down, and she will come down, she's pretty much mincemeat if she lands within a f.S in front of anyone.

I addressed Raven, his biggest flaw is the pain gimmick and the stance that comes with it because it basically makes his pressure and trades come to him for free if any real damage at all, he's honestly not that hard to block once you learn that every single Raven blockstring starts with one of two moves and always ends the same way.

I addressed Chipp. The dude's a glass canon and is fast so he deserves to be hard to block, the biggest problem with him is that he isn't hard to block, he's nigh impossible which we can fix by getting rid of his corner cross-up for starters.

Leo on the other hand isn't like any of these characters. His gimmick is to literally just be hard to read and hard to block and hard to just do anything against. He has stupid damage, a guts rating that quite frankly he does not deserve whatsoever, and on top of all that he has a fucking range attack that has high priority that is slow enough that he can do a ground cross-up with it AND an ungodly fucking AA.

Leo has no inherent weak points in his design. There's nothing he isn't at least modestly adequate in. He has an answer to almost everything in the game and the only cost to all of this is that he's relatively slow compared to other characters.

Leo isn't just broken balance-wise. He's a broken fucking character entirely. The only way to not make him annoyingly good is to change at least half of his moves so he doesn't have an answer for everything because there's no inherent weak point for Leo to work with or around.

She does 200 to 240 on most of the cast meterless leading into okizeme, has better okizeme and normals to boot. You can't tech her, you can't burst her. She's oppressive as fuck and Leo is literal kitten compared to her.

Millia has some of the best normals in the game with the trade off being she sucks at converting, but only anything she can convert into knockdown she becomes hands down the best oki monster ever with 40+ mixups you have to block honestly because of meaty disc, and like i-no there's basically no safe burst spots except when she sets the disc.

Ravens don't even use the pain mechanic anymore since specials on hit build it so removing the stance wouldn't change anything.

You can just blitz the cross up if you can't block it at all.

Backdash and fd; His normals can't convert into shit unless it's a counter hit so stop mashing. Most characters can backdash outt of his okizeme and he has to hard call it. You need to slow down because you're probably just killing yourself trying to go in on him.

Jam-fag here. What should I focus on next to improve with her? I only recently finally mastered the inputs for all of her moves, and how to chain all her special kicks together, but I can't combo for shit (I can't even finish the "basic" combos in her dojo)

I'm really shitty at these kinds of games because I just don't seem to have what iit takes for the input speed, but i'd still like to improve where I can for now, and hopefully the inputs will come with time. Right now I get by with intense pressure with her command-dashes and hapyo shinshao and whatnot.

He was dead in +R as well. If Arcsys really wanted to they could just unkill him like they did with Zato, but I'd honestly prefer it if they just brought characters back for gameplay reasons. They could just not have Kliff be in the story mode. That said, I'm convinced that if they ever bring Kliff back he's going to be one of the last, if not the last old character to return.

hmm, that's nice to hear. Anime fighter notation can be kind of daunting at first, but it's pretty intuitive once you spend some time with it. The numbers represent a direction on a numpad while the letters represent a button.
P= Punch
K= Kick
S= Slash
H= Heavy Slash
D= Dust

Sometimes the button will have a lower case letter next to it
c.= close (this is exclusively for your slash button)
j.= jumping
cr.= crouching

Not being good at combos is a way easier problem to address than not having good game sense. You simply do them over and over again in training. It might take a day or a week before you get the hang of it, but the actual hard part is being able to execute them under pressure.

Try to ask that friend to play long sets with you when they can. Even if they're much better you should still be improving by asking him what to do or going over match specific stuff. Don't try to go all out, like you should be working on a few tiny things every session so that you can be able to focus and improve. Like for a bunch of matches maybe work on just trying to anti air or something else specific. Ask your friend what you're doing wrong or can improve on and work on that. Forgot to mention, entering training without a purpose isn't a good way to practice. You should be trying to practice what you don't know or can't do instead of only doing things you already know. Really useful advice for anything you practice in life whether it be art, music, etc. If you're rusty on a combo, it's fine to work on it but it's easy to get stuck in the trap of doing the same dojo/training combos and not getting anywhere with it.

Anything that leads to knockdown would be best for you at this stage. In fact, it sounds like you are just beginning, so combos should not be your main priority- spacing and neutral should be. I suggest looking at a series of youtube videos called Guilty Gear Crash Course by novriltataki or The Streetfighter's Guide to Guilty Gear by Theoryfighter if you're from SF.

To actually answer your dilemma, combo's have a certain rhythm to them and rarely do you have to input a thing fast or late. Take the webm for example: in the first combo, after the axe kick, the only thing that required timing was the one-inch-punch>upwards kick. Everything else was dialed or chained together (that is to say, you pressed a button and pressed another button to cancel the recovery of the last attack). How people learn combos is by doing it in parts, so if you have trouble with the one-inch-punch>kick, do that move only, or ignore it and substitute it with something else that leads to knockdown.

Because Uniel is basically the hipster of all anime fighters. It's a fighter you get good at because nobody else plays it, so when you get salty in one anime fighter, you switch it over to Uniel to "redeem" yourself.

I know this because I have a friend I body 19:1 in P4U, and every time, he practices for a week, then we get through three matches where I smash his stupid Chie, then he gets salty, calls it a trash game, and switches it to Uniel until we get bored.

TLDW: 20 hours to git gud. How? Record matchs, look at pivotal points where you could have done better. Look up high level play and see how they would have done it in similar situations. Go to practice mode and experiment/practice. Go back to lobbys. Rinse and repeat. This process can be done 30mins everyday, or 15 or whatever. Just do it.

Ram needs so much tweaking, that Takehara managed to reach max rank in arcades, before any Raven, Elphelt, Zato or even fucking Millia.
Ram does have small issues, like c.S randomly whiffing, some strings not comboing at some ranges, swords repositionning not correctly.
She also has bad matchups, but that's not something you'll fix by making her current tools better. But one could argue that having bad matchups isn't that terrible when the character kills off a single touch and is horribly stupid to combo.

GG is a little slower and focuses on smaller, higher damage combos and the study is mostly about learning core system mechanics and developing tech against specific weight classes for matches. Match up knowledge is important but most characters fit into 5-6 weight classes and only a couple play so radically different you need to change your core strategy as a character.

BB is faster with heavy emphasis on long involved combos and placiing a large emphasis on character matches over system mechanics. Both are important to know but match up knowledge is even more vital than probably everything else.

This is true. GG has very simple and easy to execute BnB for many characters that can get you easily start off and have fun. While there are many options, few are extremely complicate to use in basic situation. You can enjoy the game by using the basic, knowin how to land a hit, not get hit, block when you should and escape pressure, confirm into BnB. Of course you will lose to better players but that is given for a fighting game. You can build your combo from easy to medium to optimal overtime very naturally

I feel like the game is more easier to learn and improve compared to even game like SFIV. SFIV has tons of more obtuse and hidden tech and an execution gap. Also, there's a gap from beginner to decent in SFIV because combos are easy to whiff and you get punished so hard for whiff combo. So basically you had a choice of doing memeshit with ken or a charge character like blanka/bison or grind out your execution and just so you don't lose to memeshit.

GG is slightly faster and a lot of combos and setups are higher execution. Mostly everything is designed around continuous offense and all characters are idiosyncratic so it is harder to change around characters because they all play so differently. A lot of gameplay is instinctive and born from experience because nobody exactly knows how the combo system determines whether shit will work or not.

BB is extremely resource management intensive now because of how burst works in addition to characters often having a secondary resource to manage besides just burst and super meter. Combos on average are easier and gameplay is slightly slower. Characters are designed more homogenously. The game is more knowledge heavy now because of the sheer number of characters in the game. Defense is less punishing because barrier is its own resource instead of being your super meter.

I-no player her. Treat your meter as a resource to get in on Axl. Worry less about setting up (houses, Ky's mark crap) and more about getting in his face and scoring a knockdown. Leo can throw out SOME projectiles but you really want in. faust can throw items and you're making looking for mini faust and meteorites to start going in. Your pokes are good enough you can play mid screen against him so f.s throw is something you'll do a lot.

Basically you need to play more patiently. You have to block a lot more. Also it's a good idea to have a punish for his DP.

Eddie: Poke little Eddie when possible. Avoid doing so if it ends in a trade since a lot of times it ends up favorable for Zato and he can just blockstring you long enough for Eddie to recharge.

Axl: Learn how to deal with sparrowhawk stance. Realize he can't control the ground and air simultaneously. Figure out which attacks cover what part of the screen and come up with solutions to deal with it or get around it. Then think of what Axl can do to respond to that action and determine whether or not that action is a good idea. Just learn to play Axl yourself for a day if you have nobody to play against to get a sense of how he plays. His combos are really straight forward and you can knock that out in an hour.

For Eddie, I struggle with that shit as Ky too. There's always time for jump in and you just have to make good guess and timing. The big snek will hit you out of the air and it will hurt, but it is slow and doesn't cover a lot of airspace. The small drill have long ass actice frame, block your projectile, and block you from approaching ground as well, of course you have to worry about anti-air from Zato as well and you can do aerial projectile to bait out that and mix it up as well. If you can get a big projectile out, you can get in on him since if he tried to reflect that, he will get hit by the jump in.


For Axl, your projectile will stuff out -and check his normal poke . The green chain will destroys your projectile but that is slow and has a lot of recovery on whiff. You can be ballsy and dp from full screen and stuff his chain shit, especially when he's in stance

I think it's just that a lot of the people playing Xrd have been playing AC+ for so long that it's hard to shake how bad DI used to be. I know it's part of why I don't go for it so often but I always end up doing a surprising amount of damage when I do. Making RCs easier also helped DI out a lot - I can extend my combos so much longer now.
