Firstly, every single heat sink I've ever bought had had thermal paste preapplied. Even if you removed it for some reason, it should have acted as a guide for how much you needed to add, which is a tiny amount.

Secondly you should have known you added way too much. Adding enough it leaks onto the motherboard is insane, and there is no reason at all you shouldn't have known this and saw how badly it was leaking.

Built my first pc, thermal paste on the fan worked great. Few years later my cpu temps are hitting the 70 range and I figure it's due for a cleaning. Wipe the old paste off, apply small dot, put fan on, temps shoot up to 90. Well shit, take it apart, wipe the fan, wipe the cpu, do the credit card spread method. Temps hitting close to 100. Super shit.

Wipe everything down, throw away fan, buy new one, temps down to low 50s. Fans are so cheap I think I'll just buy new ones any time the temps get high since I'm retarded and can't apply the paste myself.
