DNF failed because what they managed to cobble together was like the product of half-assed focus group market research strung together with painfully dated pop culture references.

Think about how fast internet memes move these days.

The only stuff with any real staying power, is things before social media got huge and ubiquitous. Wojak, Pepe, etc.

The fads that were trendy last month? You can't even remember them. With seven days of some twitter joke going viral, shit's already postmodern.

But imagine a Duke in 2017, 2018.

Genre throwbacks are everywhere. Doom 4, Wolfenstein New Order, Shadow Warrior, etc. They're all rejecting the Halo/COD paradigm for their own thing. Duke can transition gameplay-wise fine.

But I think there's potential for better humor. Duke drops a one liner from an 80s action film and everybody thinks he's a dork instead of a cool badass. He hits on some girls, they look at him like he's a creep. Imagine Duke struggling on social media because he's so out-of-touch. Duke Nukem as the punchline is ripe for material.

I think there's an ideal environment there. You give a smaller studio the support of a larger publisher, but their smaller size and more restrained budget allows them to stay focused rather than go all over the place with schizophrenic ambition like what crippled DNF's development.

I'd be really happy if they would release a decent scenario for Duke Nukem 3D every year or so. The game has aged surprisingly well.

I know it's pretty unlikely they will do something like this, let alone getting the original game creators again like they did for World Tour, but a man can dream.

Duke's humor doesn't work in the Internet era, seriously go back to Duke 3D. Most of the humor are references to movies or other things, which doesn't work anymore.
