my friend on steam is trying to tell me that i dont own my steam games i only rent them from valve. is this bullshit /v/?
>>
>>381215083
No

Didn't you read terms of agreement you dumbfuck?
>>
>>381215083
That's true.
>>
>>381215083
bwoah that can't be true
>>
>>381215083
It's true but if he's so consumer rights savvy why does he have a steam account?
>>
>>381215083
Banned account means no games.
Therefore you dont own the games.
>>
>>381215083
you dont own anything thats fully digital
>>
>>381215083
Read up on stories about people that have gotten their account deleted by steam, some are really sad and probably sepuku'd a few teenagers.
>>
even if you buy physical games/music you still do not own any more rights to it than digital
>>
>>381216196
>>381216391
I need sourced examples of this. The worst I have heard of are VAC bans and they definitely don't delete your games.

Based Blizzard punishing Overwatch cheaters by literally taking the game off their accounts

its higher chance they will re-buy it that way because their stats are still saved

You're friend is right. You're not purchasing games, but leasing them from steam for an extended period.
>>
>>381216489
Steam only deleted 1 game from libraries and only because it was a MMO that has their servers shut down.

>>381215083
You don't own anything digital. You just own a license to use

There have been numerious reports that Blizzard doesn't just ban 1 account, but at least does hardware or ip bans as well, because cheaters got their game banned again with smurfs despite not cheating

also you can always just change your mac adress if youre desperate
>>
>>381216773
They can buy the game on as many accounts as they want but blizzard bans within 25 minutes of play. They'd have to move, people tried to reset their IP and it didn't work either. I don't have the article.

Did you read what I've just wrote? There's no point in banning people by hardware or ip identification if you want to milk them, look at fucking Valve.
>also you can always just change your mac adress if youre desperate
Do you honestly think dumbass cheaters know how to do this or willing to pay money to get some new hardware in order to throw off the scent? You're hillarious

>>381217467
>I have like 50 ps1 and ps2 games and never bothered to sell any and if I did I could probably only gotten like 20% of the original price at best at that time.
And? That's not helping your argument, you have 50 games you can sell or gift, if you had them on DRM service (Steam, origin, whateverthefuck) you have 50 games you will never play and can't do shit with them.

>what?
nobody can take away game from you, you own the medium and system able to play it? You play it. On DRM services you just have to get banned or lose an account to being unable to play games you paid for.
>>
>>381217924
>valve does it
VAC bans are account and not IP based. The "VALVE WIPED EVERYTHING FROM MY ACCOUNT" stories are like 0.0000001% of people if even real.

why would I pay to pirate?
>>
>>381217467

>>
Friendly reminder that if you buy your video games at 100% off at Pirate Bay, you get to keep them forever.
>>
>>381218112
I play so many old games that I can never feel sure about "I think I will never play this game again" and the profit as I said is so minimal that its like whatever. Getting banned requires you to break tos and losing your account is less likely to happen than breaking your disc.
>>
>>381218204
>VAC bans are account and not IP based. The "VALVE WIPED EVERYTHING FROM MY ACCOUNT" stories are like 0.0000001% of people if even real.
Not sure how is that relevant. Blizzard is not wiping your game either, it just doesn't allow you to get it. Since it's online only your license becomes useless.

>theres literally guide about it in wikihow
Cool. Most people don't even know how to change their, static or dynamic, even though that's even easier.

Daily reminder that End User License Agreements regularly get dismissed in courts. Just because you agree to a EULA that says you don't own the games you buy, doesn't mean you don't own the games you buy.

If you're worried, just download your entire library onto a backup drive and crack them if you lose access to your Steam account.
>>
>>381218329
>100% off
I guess, if you considering having to pay with your ass in prison free. . . just sayin, ya know
>>
>>381218460
but few posts ago you just literally told that they allow you to rebuy it without telling you that it will get removed quickly afterwards

and people who use hacks you think they cannot use google?
>>
>>381218523
Why bothering with that shit if you can just pirate any game any time you want?
>>
>>381216489
Your library cannot be banned and removed from you unless your doing some really shady shit. You can receive VAC and individual game bans but those only effect related games.
>>
>>381218439
But nobody gives a fuck about what you said, feel or how much you can get out of it. You asked what rights you lose by not having a physical copy, you were answered and now move goalpost 'b-but those right's are not that important!'. If they're not relevant to you then keep sucking corporate dick and don't try to convince others that they don't need those rights either, they're not you and don't share same shit taste in both games and laws.

>breaking your disc
not everyone is American with fat butterfingers
>>
>>381218460
I'm too lazy to read the entire reply chain but I just wanted you guys to know that a VAC ban just stops you from playing on VAC-secure servers (I'll grant you that that's most servers for Valve games, but you can still play all non-Valve or singleplayer games freely)
>>
>>381215083
"bwoah, i mean it's not where we want to be but it is what it is"
>>
>>381218073
What the fuck do you want then? Do you want DRM where you don't own the game. Or do you want to buy pirated games (gog). Or do you want to just pirate?

All are shit options
>>
>>381218735
But physical copies already cost more than digital by default.

>americans
I've had literally 2 copies of CTR that got scratched/worn out from spinning in PS1 yet I never lost my account info to anything. And I'm underweight europoor if that is relevant now.
>>
>>381218581
even if you are this paranoid there are plenty of ways to mask what you are downloading from your isp. Don't be retarded to prove a point.
>>
>>381218789
I mean, you do realize buying from GOG doesn't magically makes license agreements with the publisher go away, right? You're just renting a copy either way
>>
>>381218991
Like what ways? Your ISP can see what proxies you're using
>>
To this day I have refused to buy digital copies of games and always opt for thr physical. Same goes for music, I buy the CDs so I can't be jewed so easily.
>>
>>381218983
>cost more
we were talking about rights, not costs, stop moving goalposts
if cost is your issue then you pirate, if you don't pirate then don't talk about cost
>>
>>381219232
They don't see what goes through them though.
>>
>>381218581
>getting arrested for piracy
So this is the American way, huh?
>>
>>381219310
yea okay you got the rights to pay for more you win
>>
>>381218789
>>381218259
>reseller of pirated games that usually don't even have licence to sell said game
Where did this meme come from?
>>
>>381219441
Yeah, I pay more to have right to handle my property as I see fit, you can keep renting your games and wonder why is your library locked if you don't accept updated ToS in future.
>>
>not taking advantage of a foolish neighbor who didn't secure their wifi/has a default password to pirate.

>>
>>381219840
They still have to pay for the license and give the publisher/copyright holder a cut of the profits, right? Otherwise it would be illegal
If my boss came up to me and went "okay we got another game to put on our store, please remove its DRM" I would also immediately look for a pirated version instead of working on it myself
>>
>>381220052
>They still have to pay for the license and give the publisher/copyright holder a cut of the profits, right? Otherwise it would be illegal

Did you even read the first link dumbfuck?
>>
>>381220170
Talking about the cracked shit that is still on their store, obviously
>>
>>381220170
Not him, but according to that article it's Interplay being dicks, not GoG.
>>
>>381215083
It's sort of true. You're buying licensing rights to run the games, which can be revoked at any time for any reason.

If you want to keep your Steam games, go buy another hard drive, download every game you have on Steam to that drive, and download cracks for every game. Finally, disconnect that drive from Steam so that the games won't get updated.
>>
>>381220287
Then there's no reason to buy it from GoG since people who actually made that game will never see a penny from these sales and includes work of crackers. It would make more sense to pirate shit and send donation to cracker.
>>
>>381220052
Aren't cracks just bypassing DRM, not removing them? I would prefer if they were removed in the official way, not just use a crack from the pirated version online since the bypass could lead to all kinds of issues that crackers didn't bother to fix since then. I'm not giving any money to GoG anyway but I never will if this is how they deal with their shit.
>>
>>381220447
>and download cracks for every game
Not only do you not need that for the overwhelming majority of games on Steam, isn't there also that one tool (CreamAPI) that serves as a universal crack?
>>
>>381220546
I very much doubt they're doing anything illegal here. Otherwise, these stories would have blown up in the past. Plus, CD Projekt is their parent company so I don't think they could afford any improper business. G2A on the other hand...
>>
>>381222098
Addendum: They would literally be selling "stolen" games without any profits going to the dev / publisher. That'd be much worse than piracy.
There's just no way they would have existed for more than a year without getting shut down.
>>
>>381219840
The first link has little to do with GOG. The article states that the game should have been removed from Steam too.
The other links just suggest that they're using cracks in certain games they sell. That's probably the dev not wanting / being unable to remove the DRM from the game "just for GOG" so they just agree to it being sold using a crack. The dev / publisher still makes money from every copy sold through the platform.

Hell, they sell games like Crysis on GOG. No way in hell would EA allow this if they saw no money from it, i.e. there was the slightest chance they wouldn't.
