Incoming mixups were a strength some players had over others, it was a unique skillset that a lot of novice players neglected. There was always autistic people that practiced their execution, movement, and combos everyday, though they still get smacked by the basic setups.

Incoming mixups said a lot about a team and was the biggest chance to really disgrace an opponent and show creativity. From a design approach like this I'm assuming DBZ is going closer to the guilty gear and street fighter route where they want to emphasize tournament viability. Of course this sounds more fair on paper, a guaranteed slowdown of momentum between every character death and reset of neutral. Though this really heavily narrows down the potential for team composition, the ability to make a front loaded team in an attempt to OCV is no longer a viable option, as well as it greatly favors playing whatever the go to heavy anchor of the game. Now the ONLY motivation when picking assists for your team is to pick neutral dominating assists. There's no need for picking an assist to use for mixup opportunities. Mixups were also the chance to not be completely demolished by the vergil and phoenix characters. Without a mixup the "vergil" of the game is guaranteed to be able to touch ground and run over your whole team.

In my personal experience playing fighting games, after seeing this I think DBZ is most likely going to be a fun game, though it'll most likely turn out fairly basic and slow game that stagnates out after a year considering the safe approach targeting the casual audience.

It's a staple. Modern Dragonball games go the fanservice route via putting in as much as possible.

DBFZ is doing fanservice by doing a smaller amount of stuff but getting it just right visually. The fact that every characters has animations pulled straight out of manga panels/anime scenes and there's a bunch of little references (especially in Frieza's moveset) shows this.

However, the average DBZ game consumer isn't used to this approach. They're going to be confused by the gameplay approach, the smaller roster, etc. It only makes sense if they've never gotten into more competitively-minded 2D fighters. The only games of that sort the franchise has had were on the SNES or whatever.

Kid Goku was very ingenious with the Kamehameha back in the day. Plus, before late Z, the whole shtick to the Kamehameha was that you could redirect it. And this was done numerous times in DB. Kid Goku's Kamehameha could allow him to do that. Curve it to home in. Sure, it'll do less damage, but it'll pretty much always hit for example.

Yamcha does have 2 cool moves. That's true, and I don't know how many moves Bardock has in canon and non-canon ovas, but in the games I'm pretty sure he's always had more than Yamcha in terms of unique moves. He's always had more rush based moves, Saiyan spirit, Flash spirit, Heat phalanx, Final avenger, etc. Yamcha's move list from what I remember always consists of wolf fang with like 3 different variants of it like in the XV games.
