I think if I ever made an rpg game with rare drops, I would implement a "pity meter" of some kind that increases your luck/magic-find the more you kill a certain foe, up to a certain cap.

The thing most people don't realize is that your chances reset every time you loot an enemy.

To put it simply, say there's a hat which contains tickets numbered one to ten. 1 through 5 nets you a less valuable prize, 6 through 8 can be redeemed for something of slighly more value, and numbers 9 and 10 are needed to win the big prize. You can draw as many times as you want, however you have to return the ticket you receive each time. Because of this your odds for drawing a certain prize never change in between pulls. So when you are looking at drop percentages in a specific loot pool the numbers you see are not representative of a cumulative of 100 drops, but rather a division of one drop.
