Smooth Doom is more subtle and basic, Beautiful Doom has more eyecandy that can be annoying to some, as well as some slight optional gameplay alterations.
I like both depending on what I'm doing, but I think I usually pick the latter more often.

For mods I recommend the Extreme Weapons pack which replaces the default doom weapons with similar but more extreme versions for maximum variety and fun.

Ultimate Doom in Dosbox or Chocolate Doom. Don't listen to anyone who tells you to use Zdoom for your first playthrough. Plenty of great mods use (G)ZDoom but the core gameplay changes even if you use compatability setting. If you use ZDoom for original maps you are cheating, full stop.

You can still get some best of both worlds kind of thing going by using z/gzdoom with mouselook/no-autoaim/no-jump while still keeping most of vanilla gameplay intact. I usually advise this to some of my younger friends starting up to ease them into it.

If you're on PC, GZDoom/ZDoom is the best way to get the game running on a modern machine.
Make sure to disable freelook/jumping, that's not in the original game

If you don't mind consoles, the PS3/360 ports of the game are pretty damn good

3 is the weakest in the series. Basic rule is 90s PC games > Remake > 64 > 3, though that's debatable I guess. 64 is really underrated. The laser gun (Unmaker) is cool as fuck and hasn't appeared in any other game in the series. I'd recommend playing the entire series except 3, and then if you're REALLY curious you can check out 3 (it's not BAD, it just isn't anything special in any way).

You must not play very much Quake then because its quite different. Ironically despite being slower than all the other Quakes it's closest to Quakeworld with a focus on playing aggressively and using projectiles due to the lack of a railgun so you can't just do +backward faggotry and poke like you can in Quake Live. Master server is down right now but you can still connect to the Sandwich server by IP and duel other people from time to time.

M8, you can have multiple ports at once you know. They all run from the same files. It's childs play to use different ports for different wads.

It was not possible. Original Doom has mouse support but not mouselook. Firing up and down is accomplished with autoaim. If you mean to ask 'is using the mouse at all cheating' then of course it's not, what a daft thing to ask.

Just a bit new to the series. I'm not entirely sure on what is considered fine and what isn't. I have crouch, jump, and free look disabled. I'm using mouse but I turned auto aim all the way down. As for firing up and down, is that like the ability to shoot something higher than you or literally being able to move the camera up and down?

If you're using GZdoom (and you really shouldn't if you want a vanilla experience) you want autoaim ON. Mouselook is the ability to look up and down with the mouse, you can't do that in vanilla Doom. You can't look up and down at all, so the game autoaims and targets above and below.

I picked up DOOM looking for some relaxing rip and tear. But this game is stressful as all hell. It doesn't help that I am terrible at it. Real fun though.

Now, has Doom Guy become a demon in his own right? Will this question answer itself later in the game? I haven't killed that scraggly bitch with the argent energy battery yet.
