Generations is basically 4u with some new special arts and skills for each weapon. It's sort of cool because you can have a ton of different playstyles within each weapon, but there's some balancing issues with it all. Some purists will also say that the skills make the game look too flashy I guess.

But even so, I'd recommend 4u if it's your first Monster Hunter game. It has a nice storyline that drives the story along, while teaching you the basics of the game at a decent pace. Generations just throws your in there, which is good if you've already played Monster Hunter before.

As for online, I'm not sure. I'll assume that generations has more people playing since its newer.
