This. Mishima's link is the single most important one in the game, especially paired with Hifumi. Not being stuck with the same 3 dudes the entire game is what saves the combat from utter stagnation.

Hifumi's abilities are a complete novelty, you never at any point need to switch party members out and the only "long" battles in the game are the boss ones where you don't need to switch party members out either.

If the game prevented you from changing your party inbetween battles on the main menu when in dungeons or something then I could understand it's place in the system, even your complaint makes no sense unless you just weren't aware that you can change your party up inbetween battles already.

Am I the only one who thought Mishima was a way for the developers to break the 4th wall and express their frustration with super hyper fans?

At all times Mishima will never shut the fuck up and there are rarely any neutral options to deal with him in the story (his Confidant can have friendly responses, but not in the story). Which means which you can safely ignore him as a Confidant if you hate him, you can't in the story at times. An overbearing character is like the developer's letting off steam to turn the tables on the people who act like him and having us deal with him whether we want to or not.

I get a lot of people are going to look at Mishima and be "that's a callout to insane fanboys", sure at face value. But I think Mishima represents ATLUS frustration with the Otaku in Japan at least.
