At the time the ps1 launched, the major players were going through economical troubles and mismanagement, the ps1 was a bad system at launch and easily for the first year. It got good eventually though but it's basically impossible to make it as a pure video game company rather than a huge electronics manufacturer. Sony killed real gaming through sheer money and luck.
