Every game has a standalone story (Except for the Persona 2 duology, but they're both called Persona 2) with scattered callbacks to older games, so from a narrative standpoint you're never going to be lost.

Revelations is very archaic, and more SMT than modern Persona. Most would recommend skipping it, but it's the middle ground between modern Persona and old-school SMT. I would give it a try but wouldn't blame you for getting frustrated and dropping it. Don't play the localization of the PSX version unless you like 90s hackjobs

Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment are both two halves of the same story, and have English releases on alternating platforms. (PSX EP and PSP IS) Much more polished than the first game, and has a lot more elements of the later games as a narrative and as a game. Localizations aren't perfect, but much more respectful of the source material.

Persona 3 is what people will recommend you play first because it's the foundation of every mechanic found in the next two games. You only control your main character in battle, it introduces social links, the one more system, and much more. Time management becomes a major game element from here on out. It cuts a lot of ties with the previous two games, but it's a good standalone story for it. The FES remake adds a canon after story you might be interested, while the PSP remake makes it more like Persona 4 and adds an alternate story where you play as a girl at the cost of an overworld to explore. Either way, play one of those.

Persona 4 refined elements of Persona 3 and lets you fully control party members. The game simplifies a lot of systems from P3 by compressing or removing them. Party members don't get sick, links don't get reversed, physical spells are all compressed into one damage type, etc. While it does make the experience less stressful, some people liked the challenge of Persona 3 because of additional consequences for fucking up.
