Is the New Nintendo 2DS basically a direct upgrade to the New

The new Metroid will and actually looks pretty good at doing it (demo video of it in action is available on eShop for my source).

Do the 2ds XLs come with hackable firmware? My o3ds might be ready for replacing.

I do use it, it never breaks on the n3DS thanks to head tracking.

To the XL yes but the regular New 3DS has size factor going for it still.

Also mono audio kinda sucks I guess but most people probably just use headphones.
