There hasn't been crossplay before and that hasn't killed Minecraft or Rocket League multiplayer, this is Microsoft's desperate attempt to not disappear completely from the consoles scene. They offered Sony's the chance of doing cross-play and either answer Sony gives benefits Microsoft, if they accept their playerbases merge and the don't have the problem of bleeding players for multiplayer and if they don't accept they point at Sony and say they don't care about players. In a business sense Sony would be fucking retarded to apply cross-play when they are dominating the market now, if people don't find other players in multiplayer in Xbox there's a chance they will go buy a PS4, having cross-play kills that possibility.
