can someone give me a quick rundown of why dawn of war 3 is getting so much hate?
I know nothing about the DoW games or 40k in general really. As a fan of Starcraft, Halo Wars, and Red Alert, would this be worth the purchase for me?
No it's not. Avoid this shit like the plague.
Basically it tried to mix DoW1's mass scale unit engagements, DoW2's tactical squad abilities, and Moba antics where you had to destroy towers and a powercore to win the game, not to mention that normal squads were cannon fodder against Elite units.
In the end, no one was pleased by this half assed result.

okay thanks. That's a shame

as expected.

Depends on the elite and "normal" unit. A non-elite dreadnought fucked the shit out of Striking Scorpions (an Elite) even before SS received a huge nerf. However, the huge, high-cost, late-game elites can hold through a lot of fire, but 10 specters (a modest investment in anti-tank) can bring down an imperial knight faster than the knight can bring them down. Elites are strong but no stronger than heroes of the previous DoW were, with the exception of the super-heavies which are entirely new.

They are returning regular annihilation gameplay in two days, along with turrets. I agree that only having the powercore mode on launch was fucking retarded.

Personally, I enjoy DoW3. I enjoy it less than DoW1 and 2, but I still found some enjoyment in it.
However, no, it is not worth the purchase in its current state. I've answered this question before and its always the same. The game is "okay" but heavily lacking in content. In order, it desperately needs more game modes, then it needs more factions, and lastly it needs the remaining elites/units for the current factions. Right now it is a $20 to $25 game at most.
On the plus side, the June 20th update is announced to include both a new (and normal) gameplay mode called Annihilation, where you simply destroy the enemy's base, and it is also including buildable turrets finally, which is something the game needed from the start but better late than never, I guess.
Without having tried the update yet, I can't even recommend if it is "worth the purchase" then or not. Mostly likely it will bump its value to a $35 game, IE still not worth its current price. In a year's time, I hope Relic will have expanded on it enough that I can say it is well worth it, but only time will tell.
