Recently replayed FFVII. Still think the story and translation are flawed and never found Cloud very compelling as a character. But I came away with a greater appreciation for Tifa. She has pretty much everything I like in a female character. Not just her looks, but her personality and motivations are spot on. And I have this weird fetish for female brawlers/fighters/monks, which admittedly comes from the Dragon Quest series.

What Tifa really reminds me of is a combination of the physical attributes of Jessica with the personality of Medea. In that way, she's like an improved version of Jessica. And probably the only time I can say I liked a female FF character more than a Dragon Quest one.

There's no way everyone will be happy with anything. That's why the FF7 remake is a bad idea to begin with. If they go with her old design, new players will mock her and think its a joke. This is also why dubs are not that good. For every good dub you can come up with, its always just one or two voices that are 'good'. And the rest are hammy or bad. For Dragon Quest VIII, everyone gets wet over Yangus, forgetting about how bad all the NPCs, bosses and pretty much everyone else in the cast are. One or two decent voices doesn't make an entire dub good.

On the flip side, I'm not going to say every Japanese voice is amazing. I'm actually playing FFXIV right now and some of the Japanese voices are god awful (especially Tataru and Kanna-Belldandy sama). But they have a much higher ratio of good to bad voices. Which isn't surprising since they put more effort and money into dubbing the voices in their native language. They also aren't hindered by alterations in script, mouth timing, differences in translation and all the other stuff western dubs have to deal with.

As a side note though, FFX is an extreme case where you had noted voice actors that actually didn't meet their usual potential. The voices for Wakka and Rikku are noted voice actors who have been in dozens of western cartoons. Yet for some reason, their performances in FFX feel rushed and not as good as what you usually hear from them. Probably because it...was rushed and they didn't do many retakes of scenes.

Later western dubs have improved dubbing to some extent. But still, its nowhere near good. And it would be near impossible to make it good anyway. It would take a budget far larger than a dub requires. And the people who listen to dubs obviously don't care about quality to begin with. They're just looking for any option that is English so they feel comfortable and don't need to listen to a dirty foreign language.

FFI - You make the characters. Don't even have to have females at all.
FFII - The women are the dumbest people in the story.
FFIII - The one girl on your team is an idiot Tsundere. That is, the couple times she even shows a character. Aria is a worthless plot device.
FFIV - The women are actually the better characters in the game.
FFV - Only game I haven't played.
FFVI - Terra is a tool. Celes has a good character, but falls into the same self doubt and needing a man to help her that most FF girls fall into. The other girls aren't really plot relevant except Relm for one small part. And she's more of a joke character like Yuffie.

I've played and love FFV. The girls on the team are just as relevant and important to the story as the guys are. Final Fantasy V has one of my favorite casts.
