You have three characters. Each character has a set of five cards which determine their attacks. You get five (out of the total potential 15) and play three of them. You get a bonus attack for using three for the same character.

You might get bonuses for using three of the same attack type, as well, although I'm not sure about that.

Characters also have "Noble Phantasms", with are powerful super attacks and show up as an additional card you can select. Stringing together multiple Noble Phantasms for two or three characters gives an additional benefit for the following characters: more damage, and generally more status effects.

There's also some weakness/strengths elements with the different classes, where one takes double damage from one class but takes half damage from another. Berserkers are odd in that they take double damage from everything, and deal extra damage to everything.

Other than that, combat is a fairly standard RPG system: pick your actions, your characters attack, the enemy attacks, back to your turn. Outside that is the standard mobage gameplay: lots of locations, pick the one to fight through, AP limiting how quickly you can play through the game, XP for units, gather quartz to spend for new characters. About the biggest difference there is that the game has a lot of materials to collect: you need materials for leveling up skills, and for upgrading the stage of your servant.

Not really. Stats are pretty much separate from the star rank, and so you have 3* and 4* servants which are stronger than 5*. Heck, 3* is generally considered better simply because you can summon so many more of them, making a full power NP and the skill/upgrades materials far more available.

Most of the whaling comes from the waifubait in the limited events.

Still, you have heard correctly. You want 5(?) copies of a servant to hit full power on the NP: one as your "base" and four more to sacrifice to them, to increase the NP to full power. Servants also require materials to ascend and to level up their skills, and that's where the gacha really goes to work: you can pull a rare, but it end up being a "rare material", meaning that half the time, you servant summoning is just going to get you random materials rather than servants you'd want to use. You can do 10-batch summons which guarantees at least one servant, and at least one 4*-5* pull, but that's the only guarantee you'll get.

Not quite. The chart has the full breakdown. There is a 5% chance of pulling a 5*, but that means a 1% chance for a 5* servant and a 4% chance for a 5* material.

3*, as noted, are a lot more generous. 40% for a 3* servant and 40% for a 3* material, so they are much easier to complete.
