Why do japanese devs make so many japanese-american characters?

Lots of American gamers play Japanese games, so America is a pretty big market that you could appeal too. Many people in Japan have mild xenophobic tendencies, so if you're going to add a foreign character that still needs to be likeable, it's a good idea to make them only half-foreign. With these in mind, the easiest solution is to make a half-american, half-japanese character.

A character being american is usually less about being from america, but rather being perceived as assertive, individualistic, brash, etc. The half-japanese aspect is like the other anon says, Japs won't relate to a character at all if they aren't at least part japanese.
