Companies have to distribute and manufacture a fuckton more physical copies for console games than they do for PC games, so acting like it's a negligible difference is pretty disingenuous.
On Steam the equivalent would be the entire retailer margin (since Steam is the retailer) and about half of the platform royalty.
That's $18 for a $60 game on Steam vs. $26 for a $60 game on consoles, that's a 44% increase.
Nevermind companies like EA and Blizzard who have their own distribution platforms and don't need to use Steam OR consoles, meaning they retain 100% of the revenue.

Kinda this. Was hyped for GTAV on PC for some reason, but tbqh last one I really played was Vice City on PS2...

I ended up play about eight hours, barely advanced in solo. The multiplayer is obnoxious trash. It's just endless loadings, dudes with all the expensive shits that just keep killing everyone on freeroam, god forbids you if you shoot their car because the game actually charges you for destroying. The mini games are unfun trash for the most part as well.

It's just bad. Only thing this game really has for it is the huge world and decent optimization, although I was disapointed as well by the lack of open buildings.

Can someone explain to me why so many people play GTA Online?

I tried several times with a friend. The loadings are omnipresent and way too freaking long. Free roam is cancerous trash with grinding that basically makes you invicible, plus that bullshit fine when you blow another player's car.

Mini games are all trash. The heist are decent, but same it's a nightmare to get a bunch of people together who bother playing the whole thing.

Singleplayer is pretty fucking great, but most of my enjoyment came from immersion-enhancing mods. I actually spent much more time with GTAV after completing the story than during. Some of the best mods are the realistic top speed mods, weapon sound and recoil mods, and police reworks (you no longer get a wanted level unless someone calls the cops on their phone, the army comes after you at 5 stars)

There's also a mod that brings back all that euphoria goodness from GTAIV. Luckily for me I pirated this game so I can mod the fucking shit out of it.

People that are savy enough to mod a game, and edit the game files, are also HIGHLY likely to get the game for free, by pirating it.

This means that--with the help of R* and T2's marketing--most of those people are gonna get extremely hyped to play a western GTA-like game... but they're gonna pirate it, so that marketing won't bring in any considerable amount of sales for GTA V.

Also, the audience that loves Red Dead Redemption--or any western game--is a whole different one, than the one that likes the GTA games.

Cowboys, the West, railroads, saloons, etc. are the things they love. They want some stories like in the classic italian cowboy movies. They don't give two fucks about some criminals in modern LA.

It's cowboy, or it's nothing, for them. So they have no interest in purchasing GTA V just for the mod... If they want the mod, they'll most probably just pirate the game.

And maybe they'll really like it.

To give you an example, let's say DayZ Standalone is a brand new game created by Bohemia, and no other games like this ever existed before... I spend money on marketing this type of game, and it's planned for next year.

In the meantime, some Russian Cheeki Breeki modder creates DayZ in Bohemia's Arma II for free... and you can even pirate Arma II multiplayer for the mod. You're only a fan of survival, and not really of military simulation.

Result: Bohemia spends marketing money for you to pirate its older game, and download the free DayZ mod. Since it's good, and free... you probably won't be really interest to buy DayZ standalone in one year.

I appreicate this is an hour too late, but how would 10% of sales with an extra 13% per sale be up to a quarter of the games revenue though? Like if RS sold 7.5million on Steam then (excluding the large amount of people who bought it reduced) they were netting something like an extra $3 per copy to 2K. If the PC Sales are 10% of the total then we're seeing ($3 * 7.5mil) 22.5mil + ($27 * 7.5mil) 202.5mil supposedly being equal to a quarter of ($27 * 67.5mil) $1.82billion. Like my ultimate point is that an extra 10% does not make Steam a significantly higher money earner.

Also while there may be uncounted copies from the PC physical edition, the bigger question is "how many console copies were digital". We don't know how those copies are broken down price-wise, but if they are closer to Steam than Gamestop then the amount of digital copies on console will have a big impact on the amount 2K got.

On the other hand, you have the western fan audience, which is generally a more sophisticated audience. They didn't have an open-world western game for so long, and now they have the possibility to get a free one.
