It's because of the guild "Gnomeregan Forever" on Wyrmrest Accord US.
They are obsessed with gnomes and saw the smiles and happy faces as an insult, so they had several dozens of their members strategically pestering everyone on the WoW dev team through twitter, facebook and any other channels they could find demanding that the change it. They kept this up DAILY from the announcement of the new models until they got the revamp.

Eventually Blizzard got so sick of it, that they changed all the faces to be grumpy, sour and depressing, to better reflect the people who actually play them.

This probably isn't the best place to ask since it's a lewdposting thread, but: I've been interested in playing MMOs again and I've never played WoW. I've played three months of FFXIV (two several years ago and another month after the HW launch), but I didn't stick with it because there wasn't much to do post MSQ that wasn't raiding (which I didn't feel comfortable doing because I'm shit at games).

I've always heard tons of comfy stories coming out of WoW, but I'm pretty sure that's both sampling bias because of WoW's subcount and all the stories are in the past. If I want a comfy MMO to play in the evenings that has a good community and a decent chunk of things to do that aren't content requiring substantial practice, does WoW fit the bill?

I'm kind of a lorefag and in most RPGs my characters are either a human with the rationale that they're the most relatable character in a completely outlandish world, or a different race altogether for the full-on fantasy approach, based on what looks/sounds cool. I always figured that rolling fun characters is about being able to empathize with something. So whether it is a human footman that looks undistinguished but trying his hardest to shine and having his own tale to tell (for instance, I see a fuckton of Ret Paladins raiding like they're still playing the game, but those guys that actively look at the battlefield and know how to use their utility are bro-tier) or, on the other hand, just a mysterious member of an outlandish race.

Same reason I change up between playing males or females in any given game.

Every time I boot up a new MMO it just feels like WOW, follow the giant HUD arrows and exclaimation points through a bunch of spoon fed quests that will never ever challenge you at all adnauseum.

Ironically, this is what I liked about Nostralius, I spent most of my time on that server leveling professions and got most of my levels from dungeons and grinding for meat and leather.

H&H does have permadeath, sure you can ressurect into an heir, but they only have a fraction of your attributes and only recieve a portion of your overall learning points, your XP is reset.

That being said, H&H is way more safe then it used to be.
