And no, in general. Playing video games will not make your kid smarter. There are some games which could do so, but "video games" in general will not.

And it isn't as if playing video games just makes you smart. Rather, they can make learning entertaining and into a game, and they can entice curiosity to promote future learning. Stuff like Carmen Sandiego or even Puzzle Agent can prompt kids into learning stuff on their own. Some games like My Word Coach aren't much of a "game", but can make educational activities a lot more fun to do than just studying pieces of paper.

But major AAA titles are a terrible place to look.

I always felt like games made me smarter, because they would inspire me to research subjects further and learn more so it makes more sense. I get really into games and make sure I know as much about them as I can.

However many people just stumble through games without even really figuring out that games mechanics, let alone anything about the setting its based on.

There is 2 kinds of people that enjoy a piece of media.

In case of videogames there is the one who just wants to have fun and will play whatever appeals to him without stopping to think that there is more and better out there, this kind of people will end up probably playing only online competitive games or the standard samey triple A market ignoring that there is a lot of other games out there that provide a huge variety of settings, ideas and emotions.

And then there is the one who, normally by being first in the group above, finds a gem that he thinks it's special and wondering if there is more special pieces like this hidden in plain sight will go to the internet and search for more. Searching for more he will feel like sharing his opinion and thus, reading other's opinions which hopefully will give him new perspectives to interpret the world around him. Which can either give him huge autism or make him more intelligent.

Either way, sharing your thoughts with others that know more than you is enriching in its own way and leads to find unique things about a hobby, making it your passion.
And I would rather live with passion and ambition than just hoping that I can have an easy simple life until the day I die.
