Hate on 4 all you want, it had a few great maps and some of the best hit detection in the entire series. That last part is important, but if you can't notice that, then you were probably a bad shot. There is a reason why #2 and #3 relied on bullet hose so much. The network code was just that shitty. 2 is also a bit overrated because it was 90% bullet hose and grenades in online matches. People just remember it more fondly because it was the first one on XBL and the first one most actually got to play multiplayer for real.

2's multiplayer was objectively better than 3

it was more popular

Competitive:
CE > ZBNS Reach > 2 > 5 = 3 > Reach > 4
Social:
3 > Reach > 2 > CE > 5 > 4
CE might also top social if you count CE PC, but I have to bump it down because it had no Xbox online. 3 was some of the dumbest fun I've ever had and Reach's customs weren't far behind. What's messed up about Halo 5 is that it could potentially have matched those had the launch not been so stupid and if it had developer created BTB instead of Warzone.
