Yes.

This is a common theme in all Japanese media that takes place in a school setting. Loners are viewed as outsiders for not conforming to the social norms of the classroom, which guarantees they'll be treated differently if not outright bullied. Unlike in the West in Japan the class is like one unit, so when someone doesn't fit in they're bullied for "choosing" to be different. It's even viewed as their own fault.

Japanese society is fucked on multiple levels.
