When gaming first popped up it was exclusively played by old guys, because they were the only people with access to computers since they were so rare back then.

Once arcades became a thing every pub that could afford it had one. Games were seen as an adult pass time for a long time, although kids started going into pubs to start playing these arcades. Then some wise guys got the idea that maybe they should make a whole building dedicated to games and arcades were made. They got pretty much overrun by every kid with a penny and the shift went from older guys to young kids.

Back then toys were placed on two separate shelf's, one for boys and one for girls. So console makers had to make a choice in which shelf to plonk their console onto and they picked boys (because who is going to go buy an expensive console? They were advertised as a family product but were mostly dominated by boys.

So when was this magical time of gaming not being 'in'. Because its whole history has been either old guys or children swarming it.

Star Wars Rebellion is a pretty good game. The first time I played it halfway through the game I said to my opponent "I swear i've played this as a video game before". The guy teaching me the game(my opponent) said it was based on the video game of the same name except apparently in my region the game was called Star Wars Supremacy.

That being said there's some games both competitive and co-op that I don't quite bring out to play with normies unless I know they can personally handle it because of the difficulty level in the game and some people get really fucking depressed when they lose in a game of Pandemic or Robinson Crusoe.

Once upon a time music was considered a harmful distraction to the work you should be doing, then it became more popular, songs and movements got shorter to better please an expanding audience and then it went completely mainstream and became a normal part of everyday life. Once the majority of the USA became literate reading went through the same stages. If you ask your grandparents, they'll be able to tell you that TV went through the same stages as did movies.

Eventually the majority will move on to the next big thing and game developers will return to making something that targets the core of the group that uses games as their main source of entertainment. Just don't be surprised if that takes 20 or so years.

With the release of COD4. The tides of Fifa and madden games didn't help either. Once the industry realised that there was more money in pandering to casuals than to your actual fans, there was no stopping it.
I like to think that somewhere down the line vidya will go back to catering towards people who play actual vidya once the disinterested masses get bored with it and go find another hobby to destroy. I think exactly that will happen to the comics industry very soon.
