Why is this game so praised? I picked it up during the devolver sale. My experience is nothing but extremely slow walking and disjointed conversations from house to house.

It's not supposed to enjoyable, it's supposed to be a great experience. That's the actual defense by fans.

it's unique I'll give it that. doesn't mean it's good.
Try immersing yourself and it will make sense. Nobody can tell you how to play this partiuclar game to make it enjoyable. It's neither a real RPG nor a real Action game. It's a hybrid of a lot of things. The variety of impact of your actions is what makes fans so defensive about this one.
It's an adventure game
yes it's supposed to be depressing and suffocating
Try it and maybe something nice will happen

I have
I just spend an hour walking from house to house from all over town being run around by needlessly obfuscated conversations

As a fan, you're both right. It's a slow game that has a lot of obtuse depth and some people enjoy the slow unraveling of the story.

Well it's the same thing with a brainless action movie vs, let's say, a Tarkovsky movie. You don't watch and enjoy those two movies in the same manner, and some people will be totally unable to enjoy the latter, doesn't mean it's bad.
Not implying it has something to do with bad tastes either, to each his own. It's not a fun game at all but it's not meant to be.

It's quite literally designed to be not fun. Though I don't think they succeeded, I think that by the 3rd or 4th day it gets very engaging and even fun.

Which day are you on?

This.

Day 1 it's so slow
I probably gone to 6 houses already walking anywhere takes 5 minutes holy shit

Well the walk don't stop but the first day is by far the slowest and least eventful day because there's a ton of exposition crammed in to set the stage for the rest of the game.
These tips will be of use, if you haven't seen them already.
I've started playing recently and I've just got onto Day 2. The 1st day felt like quite a slog but it's already picking up. Can't wait to find out what the fuck is going on

This. Ever play Yume Nikki? They kinda feel the same to me. Not FUN per say, but interesting and definitely an experience.
Plus walking.
I started playing it and loved the ideas behind it, but it's just too fucking slow man. Maybe I'll wait for the remake.

That's notDay 12

I enjoy Tarkovsky movies, though.
I never understood the idea that you're supposed to enjoy "brainless" movies that require you to "shut your brain off". I usually enjoy something more if it's slower-paced and has more original ideas.

the first day is a hurdle to overcome they even mention early on that you must survive the first day

Just you wait.
