Reminder that videogames had already peaked and we're just wasting time waiting for new games
>>
Ah yes, the classic fallacy of "what came before is better".

You aren't able to enjoy new games because you've jaded yourself against it, all the while saying to yourself: "It's not me! It's the games!"
>>
>>380915058
pretty much
>>
>>380915393
Ah yes, the classic fallacy of "what came after is better".
>>
>>380915514
Wrong. If you can't at least appreciate some things throughout the years then you're the one with the problem, not the industry.
>>
>>380915695
You honestly can't believe that things can peak and have a downward slide?

Guess what? There is almost no games today that come even close to the depth of these titles. Newest being prey in my eyes.

So no, you can take your fallacy talk and shove it up your ass.
>>
>>380915913
"Depth"

There are plenty of games with "depth" nowadays. You have chosen to overlook them and generalize the entire industry to fit your view of what qualifies as good.
>>
>>380916176
post some games post 2007 then

Anything I post will be disregarded as "trash" or "shallow". Your tone suggests you're cemented in your opinion and nothing I show you will change it.

The difficulty level determines the vision cone of the guards.
"Easy" was essentially a "I just want the story" setting apparently.

That is completely and utterly wrong and this comes from a person who has beaten the game on realistic at least 10 times

This is realistic difficulty in this webm here for fucksake

>>
>>380915058
Those games have elements that are superior to anything that has come since in some ways, but to assume that this means they won't ever be surpassed is silly. Furthermore, even if it were true that these games will never be surpassed, it doesn't mean that new games aren't worth playing. I think the most influential and interesting singleplayer game since the big three in OP has been dark souls, and while I don't like it as much as deus ex, it's a different type of experience and it brings something relatively new to the table that none of these games can offer, which is a truly compelling connected world that slowly unfolds in surprising ways. None of these games can offer the sense of atmosphere you get in the last of us, stalker, or metro, even if those aren't as deep in terms of gameplay. in the end, op's statement is only semi-valid if you're only interested in a very narrow range of vidya.
>>
>>380918972
it's been ages since i've played the first game, but i remember i got to this level and couldn't find a way past all the guards into this area. so i ended up scrounging up a shitload of tiny boxes and stacking them up so i could just climb over the wall. i still don't know how you're "supposed" to do it. but i felt really cool like i was breaking the game and doing something wholly unintended. felt like a real cool kid.

i miss enjoying video games
>>
>>380921334
Yeah that's one of the ways. It doesn't have a roof for a reason. You can climb through a window if you push metal boxes out of the way. You can also go through the front entrance and start a firefight, or you can bribe a kid with candy to learn about a secret entrance.

Hypothetical: if gamers from the late 90s/early 2000s time travelled to 2017 and played the best games we have to offer, do you really think they'd go back to playing Deus Ex and System Shock?
>>
Immersive sims didn't sell then and that's why LGS failed.

Immersive sims don't sell now and it's why Dishonored, Deus Ex, Prey, and Hitman failed.

Holy fuck every single stupid bastard makes this comment.

It doesn't matter what guard it is.

You're just showing your ignorance of the game and you morons claim to be fans but it's obvious you have no clue how the game works.
>>
>>380921817
I don't think they'd be in direct competition, these are single-player games that you play once or twice and move on to the next game. If someone time traveled before having played those games, then they would probably want to play the new shiny games with better graphics. They might return to the old ones later but only if they had planned to before/heard good things about them.
>>
>>380922181
Bitch I just finished replaying both games a week ago. If you think you can just poke guards on cobblestone you're fucking tarded. This particular guard is scripted because otherwise the mission would glitch out.
Never talk to me or my Thieves ever again faget

I wonder what it is about them that makes them not sell? the slow and deliberate pacing? the lack of strong branding? If the reason can be pinpointed, it might help bring a revival back in a more market viable form.
>>
>>380922749
I doubt 2 year olds would be playing those games bruh, the people he's referring to are 30ish now.
>>
>>380922870

>Don't show well in trailers
>Don't show well in trade shows or previews
>The appeal isn't immediately apparent within the first 10 minutes
>A deliberately slow pace

I love the genre, but it's not designed to be massively appealing. Making a AAA tier immersive sim in 2017 is fiscally irresponsible,
>>
Thief 1/2 are in a class of their own, these are truly immortal games. Dude Sex is still great, but feels clunky and dated, and it's type of storytelling was done to death. SS2 is just meh save for amazing atmosphere.

>squatting in a shadow to see the guard routes

>press X to make Spider-Man do cool things

>lonely protagonist that says 5 snarky lines in the whole game
or
>God of Last of Us: we will never shut up about feelings
>>
>>380923148
All those points are true, but immersive sim-lite games Human Revolution and Dishonored seemed successful enough. Something about those games had mainstream appeal that Prey and Mankind Divided lacked. Both HR and Dishonored had flashy and appealing settings, simplified gameplay systems and scaled down hub areas, but I think that somthing about the aesthetic of the IPs in relation to the market at the time had a bigger effect than the dumbing down.
>>
>>380923998
>>380924149
As a second point, I wonder if indie development is viable for the future of immersive sim. I can't think of a good one.
>>
>>380915058
SS2 is a mess, far worse than SS1.
>>
>>380923735
What nostalgia? Almost every genre GOAT is from this era. Can you make an argument against it, neon clad mid thirties ironic man?
>>
>>380920034
Source for the webm gameplay? Because on all my playthroughs I remember having to be pretty careful not alert the Castle Clinton courtyard guards there.

At any rate, yes the AI isn't perfect for a stealth game, but then pure stealth games tend to be either linear af (Splinter Cell) or completely focused on stealth mechanics (Thief). It does what it's meant to do pretty well. Still have to try a GMDX playthrough but I'm hoping it'll be even better.
>>
>>380924358

Neon Struct was a pretty decent Thief/Deus Ex style game, but it apparently bombed completely.

Don't get me wrong, Morrowind is amazing in a lot of ways, but I wouldn't call it the last good game EVER. It set a high bar to be sure, but just because more recent games haven't topped it doesn't mean they aren't good in their own way. BotW, for example, is definitely at least a good game. I'd even call it great, and the most of the criticisms you see of it complain that it's overrated, not that it's actually bad.
>>
>>380925660

But I've already played the original LoZ, why would I want to play it again but without dungeons and filled with shit content?

>>
>>380925407
Just glancing at the screenshots, the art style is just completely unappealing, which kills the atmosphere and motivation to continue in a slow paced game. Even if they managed to make a good story and fun gameplay loop, it seems that the first person view component of immersive sim might require more from the art team than an indie team can handle. it's not surprising that all the successful indie stealth titles have been from the top, isometric or side views.

Deus Ex is probably the most friendly of them, if you played HR or MD it's their autistic older brother genius. Be patient and you'll be rewarded
System Shock 2 has similar relationship - if you played Bioshock, it's SS2 with linear levels
Thief 2 (and 1, no one was ever able to determine which is better) can't really be compared to it's retarded descendants, go in blind and be very slow

I mostly agree with you but there are at least still great games that do release even if they are rare now.

I feel that the problem with games today is that because most are "good enough" it gets misinterpreted by people that these games are great. There are much fewer greats in gaming compared to back then.

So an example to see what I mean here.

>year 2000
20 great games get released this year, many other good games and mediocre crap of course

>current year
Maybe 5 great games if we are lucky. More good games than back then but a lot less all time greats. Plenty of mediocre crap like before. So many games come out though that good enough shouldn't cut it anymore.
