No, it happened to Kirby all the time. A lot of them were outright canceled too. What changed is that they stopped announcing them until they're very near completion. Who knows how many delays or cancellations there were that nobody was told about?

It looks good but no it doesn't look like a successor to Crystal Shards at all. They're doing the Super Star designs/atmosphere, and the modern tile-based 2.5D style instead of 64's more dynamic 2.5D style. GCN looked kind of like a hybrid between Super Star and Crystal Shards in style, but this latest one looks totally different from Crystal Shards besides mixing copy abilities (which is more Squeak Squad style than 64 style)

They seem more like elemental flavors that can go over weapon-based powers, or something that combines into a super move.
You can mix your abilities with a helper's too, at the end of the trailer you can see the whip guy has a spark effect.
Some of them will probably be Kirby-exclusive like the curling stone.
It looks pretty cool. I just hope there's piggyback riding.

Piggyback riding could be great. It could make coop pretty fun.
My biggest concern is the content though.. I hope this game has more challenge than the norm.. and possibly a multiplayer mode like Shards
