It was the only one I really played, I felt like Dark Souls was different and while I beat it I didn't love it. I kind of dropped the series after that

This actually happened to me too. It felt like Dark souls was a huge step down. I had to replay it three times with a couple months interval between each before I made it past the undead burg. Weirdly enough though, when Dark souls 2 came out, I was already used to change so I fell in love immediately. Makes me realize that a lot of people who hates 2 probably didn't play demons souls on release and hadn't experienced and gotten over this "change" period yet.
