If anything, all of this MH drama has shown me that there are fans of the series that place importance in different things. I personally find styles to be pretty awesome, since it essentially gives me 4 different GS movesets rather than 1, and they drastically change how I play the game. I like the over-the-top animation bullshit and parrying stuff.

There seem to be people who want MH to be a legitimate hunting game, whereas it's always been a boss-rush sort of game to me, so I don't think we'll ever see eye-to-eye on that front.

At the same time, I think X was a weak entry in the series, as 4U was far superior in every way except for styles.

I was also super hesitant on World after that first trailer, but seeing more stuff and hearing people talk about it makes me a lot less nervous. I'm still pretty skeptical and waiting for all the news to come out, but right now it basically looks like a better version of 4.

I honestly hope that the gimmicks (grappling, the monster chasing you, stealth, etc.) are heavily toned down. imo, if you have to rely on the terrain or w/e every hunt it'll get stale real quick. It's partly false-flagging, partly console wars, and partly because the E3 trailer was pretty garbage, and made a lot of the fans of the series freak out.

All the real fans have seen the actual gameplay by now and have had their fears assuaged somewhat, but it's reasonable to be skeptical still. The game is trying to appeal to the Western audience, so quite a few small changes have been made. We're all kind of just hoping that the draw of the series remains intact for us.

Oh, I totally agree. I hate the grappling hook. I've never been a big fan of mounting, but I've also never been one of the people to hate the new games just because of it. The amount of mounting we saw in the gameplay was really worrying to me, though. On the other hand, it seems the mounting system has taken some inspiration from Dragon's Dogma, where you have to climb around the monster's body in ways that it can't smash you off using the environment.

I like the verticality of the levels, but I also really don't want to be running the monster all around trying to find thing to drop on it, paralyze it, etc. I just want to hunt some goddamn monsters in some nice levels.

I am also scared for the content, but they're reusing assets pretty heavily. The monsters they've shown have reusing animations from older games. Hopefully they reuse as much assets as possible, and take some models from MHO to give us a wider variety of content.

I will say that I am a bit more lenient on stuff when it is first shown, especially when it is clear that the game will not be out for several years. I have seen a lot of examples of games improving over time (as well as the opposite).

Follow up

The PS4 has a great controller. Not as good the Xbox One controller, but still pretty good. Xbox One controller for PC, PS4 one for it's own console.
The Switch has a pretty bad controller. I'm not sure how the pro-controller is, but I'm not spending an additional £50 quid to make up for it.

The Switch has no decent online features. The PS4 has a pretty robust online-system. Usually Nintendo would get away with it because the online is free, but now that's not the case.

Games wise, I think Nintendo have a huge leg up on the PS4 in its first year. I just hope they'll keep it up and keep releasing a bunch of good games or they'll blow their load too early, just like their E3 presentation.

Feels weird to see so many staple mechanics, most of which even had armor skills affecting them, being altered. XX is the hardest game in the franchise if you use Guild mode and no arts, because they slowed down the Stun recovery three times.

This means that taking two hits from ANYTHING in the same 10 seconds leads to a stun, which is a guaranteed 3rd hit which is guaranteed death. The 2nd hit can be the monster tapping you, or walking into you. It's super fucking annoying.

alright. it might be okay but that's cause im giving it the benefit of the doubt. in any case, i'd take XX on the switch any day. this may be a little much seeing as its new play style for the series is too off putting and kills it a bit. if they didn't decide to make it look like they cut off from the developments made in 3u and made it look like a direct upgrade from tri-portable that adds gimmicks that may actually take away from the game it would look better. i'd'v been fine with a flat out port of monhun online but this is way too momentum killing for the monhun play style in recent years and doesn't seem to try to add onto any previous titles. honestly, the core mechanic change not building but reconstruction seems like a downgrade in game play, and that a lot seeing as i'm putting it below the wii u, then again, the wii u did have some great games so i guess the mistake was trying to put a grapple in.
