Final Fantasy XII is my favorite FF and one of the games I spent the most time on, but also the game I hate the most.
The "linked chest"-system ruined fun in vidya for me. (The strongest weapon only appears in a chest midgame, if you don't open some specific other chests before it. One of them lies right before your feet after a cutscene half an hour into the game)

Over 10 years later I still can't just sit down and play a game anymore. I always go online first and check if there's anything I can miss, therefore tend to spoiler myself a lot.

They're fun games with absolutely retarded stories and characters, even by JRPG standards.

And it's not even a self aware bizarre stupid that's enjoyable, like in the NieR games, it's a "14 year old anime fan tries to write a dramatic screenplay" kind of stupid. And every now and then when it actually starts to hint at something vaguely interesting, like that part in Final Fantasy 9 where vivi learns that him and his people are doomed to die within a few years or whatever are just relegated to short lived sideplots.

The only game that actually had an enjoyable plot was FF7 because it was so batshit insane that it was somewhat captivating.

Lenna was my favorite as well. It's true, she's boring, pretty much the only character that doesn't have any funny scenes. She's very kind, I bet she'd have a lot more fans if FFV was a 3D game.

Krile is carried on the back of Galuf, one of the best characters in the damn franchise, so she already hits the ground running with a fairly high score despite doing almost nothing of interesting herself. While Lenna goes the opposite direction of getting overshadowed by her sister a lot of the time.

My first FF was IX. That and X hold such a monumental place in my heart that I consider them to be formative elements in my life, not just my taste in games.

However, as I got older and tried some of the earlier, supposedly better entries, they felt very silly and disjointed. And we all know about the shitshow that is modern FF. So at this point I have to admit it was a fluke at best, and more likely just nostalgia on my part. I mean, I can analyze the shit out of those games six ways to Sunday with seemingly conclusive evidence, but at some point I stop and realize I've seen the same thing from some autist here sperging out about their favorite "masterpiece" and all their arguments just sound like dogshit to me. It's pretty depressing tbqhwyf

They're definitely not as bad as everyone makes them out to be. XIII suffered from intense linearity and lack of combat depth (not like FF games generally have a lot of depth to them anyway). XIII-2 improved the gameplay but the plot became absolutely retarded even for jrpg standards. XIII-3 further improved the gameplay and further retarded the plot, some mechanic were also kinda too convoluted for their own good.

Overall, none of them was worth full price but all of them are worth current bargain bin price.

I wanna play Vagrant Story but it's not on ps4 and I don't feel like emulating it on pc because I'm lazy about setting up the emulator plus controller and hooking it to the tv.

Don't do it. Remember when Conan said the game was "an aggressive waste of time"? Well he was actually right.

This past year I played through FF IV-X for the first time. Gotta say I enjoyed them all.

IV was my least favorite, V was my favorite.

I also think VIII is extremely underrated, it's a pretty good game and the cast is actually very likable (aside from Rinoa I suppose). I know it's a rare opinion but I like VIII more than VII.

Not really, you can buy the game for what, 20 bucks now? It's well worth the 20 bucks. If you went in with all the hype surrounding it you'd be really disappointing but if you just see it as another game, it's a very decent one.

I played the PSP remakes of 1&2 and enjoyed them both. Tried to get into 3 with the PSP remake (based on the DS version) and it's unbearably slow. The chunky low-poly aesthetic doesn't work for me. Should I skip 3 and go straight to 4 on PSP?

Idk I just got zero enjoyment from it, and found flaws in everything from story to gameplay. Maybe I might have been more forgiving if it wasn't been hyped by everybody as the best thing to come out of the FF7 compilation and even better than FF7 itself, then I would have considered a regular not-very-good turd then just moved on. But it actually pisses me off every time I see it get praised especially by FF7 detractors even though it not only had all the same flaws of the original FF7 but an array of new bullshit of its own.

Not from my experience they aren't. In addition they severely beefed up enemy health and damage output, which made it even more grindier than the entire PS1 trilogy combined.

I felt that Faris became nearly invisible in world 3, Lenna had at least an interesting bonus cutscene fleshing her out a bit.
Krile had too little scenes, but the one where she banters and punches Bartz still makes me chuckle. Reminds me of his relationship with Galuf.
