That is why it sold and continued to do well through WotLK, where it peaked, both in player count and user friendly ease of pickup.

Cata basically was the worst followup, with a threat we didn't care about, and a complete upheaval of classic content.

The two major core concepts of an MMO are progression and community.

The problem with WoW is that the devs tried to improve the game and destroyed both of those traits. Great example is the LFG tool.

The problem? Took fucking forever to form groups for raids and dungeons. You had to use trade chat to advertise your group and get people in and that clearly is a flawed system. So did they give the players tools to find people easier? Nope, automated the whole fucking process and you get paired with literal strangers on random servers. Which surprised surprise led to nerfing the content because literal strangers automatically queueing for shit are worse than people teaming up from the same server.

This is the patrician post. I would add that gameplay needs a heavy revamp, not just to go back to classic style gameplay, but even further than that. A wide variety of stats that weigh heavily on the nature of your playstyle (not just your raw output). A world with environments that will fuck you up if you aren't careful, like the new Zelda but with much more emphasis on the danger.

Their biggest mistake with WoW was seeing expansions as an infinite extension to the main game. The expansions should have stopped at Wrath and from there they should have built an entirely new game from scratch. Instead they let the diseased cash cow collapse in its own festering filth to rot away.

The problem with the LFG tool was that it only went down hill because of fucked up server architecture, as in there were never enough people at any given time to guarantee you could run that dungeon you wanted because servers were only a few thousand people. Basically, it was the other side of the problem they were trying to fix by introducing instances.

Instances were introduced because in EQ you would get groups camping out in a dungeon to grind XP, and because someone else wanted to camp that same spot, they'd start fucking with each other, and no one would get anything done. In an instance, its just you and your group doing shit to your hearts content. The problem is when no one wants to run those dungeons, it becomes an issue of no one ever going there because you need X people and gathering anything short of X means you're not going to do it.

No. There's no doubt that raiding is fun for the right person but most people just don't give a shit. Especially now that there isn't even any incentive to raid for your average casual since you can just get all the benefits from LFR. LFR, LFG, and all the other content simply isn't enjoyable unless you're autistic. That's why most casuals play this game for a month and then quit.

My understanding is that at Light's Hope Chapel everyone realized that Arthas was just throwing DKs at an impossible mission. Darion got so mad that he threw Ashbringer at Tirion, big Light happened, kablam. Now we're the Ebon Blade and our mission is to ruin the LK. And then after that happened we sort of just folded back into Alliance or Horde, but maintained our ties to Acherus and the Ebon Blade.

WoW models work very strangely, basically, each race-hair-haircoulor-earring-skintone-legpiece-chestpiece-headpiece-weapon ect is an entirely different character model, but each model can only display so much data without needing to go through a mountain of spaghetti code just to increase the limit. As someone who autistically played from launch to cata, I assure you I do not want vanilla. Vanilla is kinda cool if you have no life, but even then it grinds. BC is the idea nolifer expansion, with wotlk being the best everyman expansion.


Modern WoW makes a bunch of mistakes, but at the end of the day its main issue is that the content that makes it fun requires you to play on a work like schedule which is not realistic once you grow up past the age of 20. If I won the lotto, I would totally play the shit out of modern WoW even with it being not as great, but I can't pour 50+ hours a week down the drain for a video game when I have to manage work, family, and school.
