It's not the configuration, it's the AI itself. I've lost count how many times I've died because Morrigan runs off somewhere during the fight and pulls another room, because, for some reason, she wanted to cast a spell there, or because Alistair chases some archer into another pack of enemies, or Wynne completely wasting Lifeward, or any other healing spell, or having enemies be somewhat equally divided between two tanks, and then Alistair decides to use taunt.

The Mountain Temple is half a zone too long, otherwise its fine. You're free to leave the elf forest at any time, its the old castle/caves that feels like a bit much. The Fade is what I feel is the worst, its got needless backtracking, and once you're there you're stuck.

It's not canon because it's just a choice you can make. However if you did that, she will mention it to the Inquisitor and in fact you will visit the place Morrigan and the Warden went to.
She says they spent some time there, doesn't say how long. Loghain wanted to use the darkspawn problem to cover his power play, he offed Cailan because he was willing to ask for the Orlesians help, and he was supposedly consorting with the Orlesian Empress. He didn't know that one for sure unless you take him to Ostagar in the DLC, but more than anything he hated the Orlesians and loved his country so he would go to any length to do what he believed was right and he believed he was the only one who knew what right was. Turns out the darkspawn horde was a true Blight and he wasn't prepared for that, and about the survivors that weren't part of his army knowing. He simply killed them, and placed the blame on the Warden's for failing Cailan. Its not likely everyone in the battle would have known, or cared since that line at Ostagar was supposed to win it all or lose it all. So people like the Hawke family and Aveline straight up fled for somewhere safer.
