Why can't they make anything besides p2w grindfest MMOs?

Koreans like games that take a lot of effort because it differentiates a casual from a try hard. That and having addictive personalities you see a lot of Koreans get into skinner box type games.
>>
They also make really good Skyrim sluts that unlike the Japs, they refuse to share.
>>
They need their game to run on the shit hardware in internet cafes because no one games at home, so that makes anything fun or interesting difficult to design

Combine that with the compulsive gambling habit that runs rampant across Asia and the weird need to to just mindlessly punk hundreds of hours into busywork, and you get endless grind.
>>
>>380808976
blame the koreans who play them
>>
they make good panels and sensors

I remember a post about an anon whose korean girlfriend grinded all her pokemons to lvl 99 before doing the elite 4. I guess grinding is just in their genes

> have Korean cousins
> visit them 13 years ago
> both the male and female cousins are active gamers
> in Resident Evil 3 they laugh while fucking with the AI for Nemesis, running laps around him
> one cousin has a bootleg copy of the House of the Dead arcade game and breezes through the first level without taking a single hit and saving every civilian
> another cousin was showing off Whiteday and cracking jokes about how bad the AI for the insane janitor is
> female cousin has an extensive collection of JRPGs whose names I don't remember since they were all in Korean
> several of them have huge collections of toys from claw machine games, since they all seem to be extremely gifted in all of them

> 13 years later and it's today
> males have all graduated from the military and are getting some pretty steady government jobs
> one female cousin studied her ass off and was able to earn a high level business position without ever having to sleep with anyone
> other female cousin (who owned all the JRPGs) used to be really chubby but spent two years losing weight and getting into incredible shape
> I'm an American university drop-out NEET
> the only online interactions with Korean gamers that I have today are almost always negative

There was a point to this story but I got too depressed to remember what it was supposed to be.

Koreans will literally spend hours watching people eat food on twitch streams. They also believe a desk fan slices oxygen molecules and suffocates people while they sleep. Their pop stars are raised in factories, and they treat esports players like celebrities. Looking into their culture is a rabbit hole you don't want to go down

>>
To be fair, Koreans have the best hair tech in vidya, second only to Alice Madness Returns and Crystal Dynamics.
>>
>>380808976

When 75% of your population is playing online games either at home or a LAN center, you make games that cater to that.
>>
>>380812368

Because they don't really have too and that shit seems to make shit fuck tons of money. Better question is why can't they make an MMO that doesn't feature hyper sexual chicks with porn star bodies. I mean when you're at the point where "looks like a Korean MMO character" is a valid descriptor in conversations with your buddies and they all know exactly what you mean you've hit the stereotype stage a bit.

Dungeon Fighter Online is a Beat Em Up I guess.
>>
>>380810949
Don't they have like 12 hour schooldays too, as far as I'm aware they go there early in the morning and then they leave at like 8 or 9pm. Must do something to the psyche
>>
>>380816074

Koreans are like Vulcans, but with their emotions intact.
>>
>play Alienation with my brothers
>it's a fun game for a bit but after hitting endgame it becomes very repetitive, not much to do besides replay the same things
>game has leaderboards for various things
>all the top guys are from Japan or Korea or something

>>

> 12 hour schooldays

Holy shit, I forgot about that. I think the absolute bare minimum is closer to what American students go through, but people start to gossip about you if you're seen leaving too early once you reach high school. This is just based on what I've heard from Korean relatives.

In the United States, I hear horror stories from software developers being forced to sleep in their offices for weeks at a time during crunch mode and how that fucks with their mental health, in addition to their physical health and the strain on their personal relationships. Being forced to go through nearly that same level of pressure and isolation as a teenager isn't going to be good for the next generation of Korean youths. With their mindless obsession with Korean pop idols and karaoke contests, they're going to be worse than the American Baby Boomers in terms of depression, substance abuse, and sheer lack of purpose in their lives.
>>
>>380816951
Then there's that whole thing with the country being some kind of weird test lab for a crazy femininist cult but that's a different matter entirely. I think both Koreas are batshit crazy, they just went in slightly different directions. North Korea makes you work the fields through force, South Korea makes you slave away in school and offices through shame
>>
>>380812368
>Koreans will literally spend hours watching people eat food on twitch streams
They have a tradition of social dining and mukbang is an extension of that, now that everyone isolates themselves into tiny bachelor pads.

>>380812368
>They also believe a desk fan slices oxygen molecules and suffocates people while they sleep.
This is a silly urban legend but there's a granule of truth to it: you can get hyperthermia by leaving a fan on while it's balls hot and the window's closed.

South Korea was a borderline fascist dictatorship as late as the 80s, where the government murdered a shitload of civilians after some protestors started throwing rocks at patrolling soldiers. Then it escalated when the civilians seized a local armoury and the government responded by murdering just a shitload of more civilians, whether or not they were involved in the rebellion attempt. Shit was awful.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwangju_Uprising

Then you have the Silmido incident, where a bunch of Special Forces operators went rogue and killed their way into the South Korean capital for a reason that the South Korean government still won't publicly explain. They even made a film about it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silmido_(film)

The "Korean Wave" movement was basically just a huge government-sponsored PR campaign by investing shit loads of money into film and music, so they could do foreign damage control by shoving their K-pop girl groups and their soap operas everywhere. The problem is that if you have Korean relatives who are more aware of and critical of this shit (who are definitely a minority in that country today), it's easier to see through all of the bullshit.

It's an entire country of good people who are being fucked over by their government and a repressive social culture that values money over personal autonomy.
>>
>>380808976
They pirate fucking everything. Why bother making games that you can sell when you can just turn them into whales with a game everybody can play
>>
>>380810194
It's this. The reason Asia's game market is freemium is due to it being centered around their net cafes.
>>
>>380818402

True. If you were living in the philippines, people would call you rich for owning a PS4. 90% of the population plays on net cafes, and those who do game on their homes, play for single player games. Usually, the people who do buy consoles are kids with rich parents.

And then the whole population just becomes insanely ugly because nobody knows what anyone actually looks like. But it's ok since everybody just gets plastic surgery anyway
>>
>>380817368

The Park Gyun Hye Scandal? She is in jail now along with a lot people. More successful in taking back their government than their Jap neighbours with the Yakuza.
>>
>>380808976
Yes it's a cultural thing. Only major devs can exist in Korea cuz of local laws. Every website and online service in Korea has to be linked to your social security number and to do this you need to purchase an expensive license from the government. You can't even host your own forum in Korea without doing this. As such there are no indy devs in Korea.

In Korea you can also be raided for "illegal gaming". That's playing vidya outside of strict curfew hours. Because every website/game/service requires your social security number the government knows exactly where you are and what you're playing. Police literally come to your door and arrest repeat offenders for "illegal vidya gaming" and take them to re-education centres where they receive electro-shock therapy to cure their addiction.

Also porn is illegal, so if you want to masturbate your sadness away there you have to do it to shitty K-pop.

These, along with other factors, have lead to the Korean vidya industry just being endless grindy gambling-based MMOs because after finishing their 14h shift after their 10th straight day of work they just wanna drink and grind their sadness away.
>>
>>380810194
>>380818402
Do Koreans not play console vidya? I am aware they apparently had a ban against Japanese consoles during the 80s, but it seems enough time has passed to establish it there.
>>
>>380820238
I'd be surprised if they even own a tv to play vidya on. Isn't that one of the reasons why those hueg screen phones are so popular in Korea, it might be their only multimedia device so they want a big screen for it
>>
>>380820238

Some do, but probably irrelevant compared to people who game on PC, like other countries in Asia sans Japan.
>>

actually, my mother was taking part of the student protests during that era. Koreans absolutely hate Japanese portrayals of themselves and vice versa. Even when Koreans pay for royalties for manga and the likes, they sometimes change the names for korean audiences.

Anyway, when Hetalia was the biggest thing, Korean protested about how shitty their portrayal was and I guess Japan just decided not to bother having any sort of korean character.

It's just made worse when a third country shithole manages to rapidly increase its wealth and industry in less than a century and establish all these laws and regulations without going through the proper steps how and why the should implement these in the first place.

Does the average gook hate japs

in japanland most people don't really care and we have koreatowns and shit but we still have people crying about koreans everyday in the streets
>>
>>380833470
The last few months for Korea were actually hopeful and unifying. Students from highschool and college, business workers, and a whole boatload of people all came together for demonstrations for the president to step down but she, like the pawn she is, kept saying she'll stay in office no matter what, even if it meant literally chaining herself to the seat. Every weekend would have a large number of the population protesting in the cities and every night everyone would go home by trains and they could cheer and encourage each other that they would change the nation and the older ladies handed out food and the likes for everyone that participated. I think they even mentioned how they wanted to be like the French and cull the president and her lackeys.

The current elect is someone better, and the ones my parents threw their bribery chips in with so maybe my folks will be millionaires again. Hilariously enough, Korea doesn't even have a proper party system so there were at least 50 goddamn candidates.
>>
>>380833941
As someone who grew up there, I think the thought wouldn't be too far off for the circumstances to be similar. The older generation of course curse Japan to this day but the younger generation are worried about their own shitty lives with school and the pressure of society. The hate is still intrinsically ingrained that they'll crack jokes no matter what.

Every thread involving Korea seems to end up the same way

My korean boss once caught me looking up Samurai in wikipedia because For Honor just came out and he gave me a mean look. Asked me if I was interested in Japan. Gave him a nervous "kinda" because I thought he would scold me for slacking off. Instead gave me a brief rant on how those pigs have no shame.
>>
>>380834457
to be fair

samurais are glorified to hell and the average samurai killed for fun
>>
>>380834370
From an objective standpoint, even my folks think Korea is an absolute shithole that's hell for anyone that's a student or a businessman. Since it's been less than a decade for the older generation that haven't died off yet, I guess the scars from WW2 are still "fresh" but eventually, it'll literally fade away with the last of the veterans. I'm all for fun still.
>>
>>380833639
I think something similar can be seen in Japan's legal system. They pay lip service to human rights and western ideas, but the reality is far different.
>>
>>380834606
Who cares they are cool, just like cowboys, viking, pirates, kung fu masters, knights ect. It doesn't matter if they were jerks.

>I hear horror stories from software developers being forced to sleep in their offices for weeks at a time during crunch mode

As a CM (voluntarily) for a game in early access I can attest to something along these lines. Whenever we would be working on a trailer for an upcoming update the other staff and the techs would talk about how long they figure they'll be staying up helping with the builds to make sure that the updates come out as smooth as possible, with no one ever saying they see themselves staying up any less than 30 hours.

The crazy thing is none of them carry this tone of voice like they hate having to stay up and deprive themselves of sleep. It's always ranged from some level of eagerness to work that long or indifference to it.

>>

Their wages have never come up in us shooting the shit. As for me, I'm a volunteer from their pool of beta testers. I get to sleep and do shit if I feel like it when I feel like it. I don't get paid but I don't get flak either. Listening to how they talk, I'm leaning more on drinking Kool-Aid than being cucks.
