>What would a spiritual successor look like?
A completely linear game with a story that focuses on retarded pseudo-philosophical nonsense and has exactly zero challenge due to allowing the player to grind indefinitely. In other words, just take your run off the mill Japanese SRPG, call it FFT2 and nobody will notice anything.
>>
>>380782997
>What would a spiritual successor look like?

We don't need a spiritual successor, we need a proper 3D style of this game. I have put together an idea of what that would look like:

Fully 3D, with rotational cameras. Battles are a mixture of real time and "turns". You can stop at any time and order units around and they'll do it.

Example: Order Unit A to the 2nd floor of a building, sit by the window and hit enemies with a cross bow. Unit B is ordered to to guard the base of the building to prevent anyone in. Battles then resume in real time, and they follow AI until told to change. You can control any particular unit at a time, and your perspective changes with them. You are limited to what the characters can see or have seen, and there's a "fog of war". You can during pausing switch to an overhead view showing the placement of your units.

I've played Xcom and Banner Saga. Divinity doesn't really scream SRPG to me in the way FFT does.

All of these games are good and a recommendation depends on what you actually like. If you've played XCOM and liked it, try Xenonauts and Shadowrun Chronicles now and wait Phoenix Point and Xenonauts 2. If you liked Banner Saga, play Expeditions Vikings.

I wish they would make a proper Final Fantasy Tactics sequel, this time all new protagonist, all new characters, instead of being based on the War of the Roses maybe instead be based off something like The Crusades (but a proper re-telling, not making it one sided but able to be viewed in multiple ways).

Would love to see all the old classes return plus some new ones, or just see the old classes completely revamped. To this day I can still play FFT over and over and not get bored.

The ascetic of sprite stuff looks amazing still. I mean, the 3d fire emblems look fucking awful compared to any single pixel one.
If we get a new FFT I wish it would be in line with how Tactics Ogre: LUCT looks or even Project Octopath. Speaking of Octopath, that group would probably be able to do an interesting twist on a tactics game.
Also they're returning to Ivalice in FF14 in the expansion they just dropped with a raid centered around it, written by the guy who did FF12, FFT and Tactics Ogre.

That would feel too much like a new IP, plus how would you work it into the setting? Ivalice spans several games including Final Fantasy XII, speaking of which, was the first real letdown of a main Final Fantasy title.

Doesn't make it a good game imo. The story is still lackluster compared to FFT and the game is still easy as fuck just like FFTA.

Yeah and you think Tactics will be the game they return to? Tactics didn't do anything specific that warrants bringing back that IP, as much as I love it. Just play Tactics Ogre or any half decent tactical game that has since been released.

>>380795496
Ivalice was always a great setting which is why they chose to do FFXII about it, as much of a mess that turned out to be.

>>380795559
It was. The story fell flat. Why do you think people aren't talking about it now? It's not just because it's an old game. You can't ignore the fact that it had a lot of production problems - the director was let go for "medical reasons" and the team was way off schedule with FF XII, at the time, comprising the longest gap between FF titles.

Ivalice is supposed to be an epic setting a la Tolkien or GoT. A lot of IPs try to be this and most fail. The problem is in the fleshing out of the material - there's just so much to do, so much to be consistent about, esp. for the Japanese which tend to be perfectionist, run into trouble about being stuck in the details.

That's one of those things that only sounds good if you don't think about it too much. So, for research purposes, what would you guys like in another tactics game? More jobs? A way to combine jobs? Change of mechanics for armors and weapons? Different landscapes for battlefields? Give me your thoughts. A good story should be a given.

More classes, and more weapons with more weapons being usable per class. FFT could have used a Berserker class in the vein of the FFV version that just goes crazy and autoattacks for a lot of damage. Go the TO LUCT route and allow for a melee and ranged weapon at the same time. Rogues with daggers and blowguns or lobbers are a fun class to play around with.
>>
>>380797647
I'd love to see a FFT/Tactics Ogre + Xcom kind of game. Like some kind of geopolitical game with FFT style battle + character management where you have to balance different duchies/baronies in the kingdom before they revolt/get consumed by evil or something.

Less shit jobs.

Better hiring system. I want my characters dying for realism but I don't want to freaking have to retrain a rookie to replace him. More money for better experienced characters.

3D and generics don't look alike. Character gen. for facial features, with classes being represented by attire rather than a full pre-generated portrait.

Generics talk/give their opinion on what's going on in the menu.
>>
>>380797647
I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I've been fucking around with ideas for a long time.

Basically it comes down to
>Meaningful choices
FFT for instance has a lot of meaningful choices to make. You get to customize your characters, but something that's inherent to the genre is you're actually choosing where to move, and what abilities to use.
>Jobs/Classes having a balance of upsides and downsides.
FFT fails spectactularly at this.Mostly because any of the "tanky" jobs like Knight or Lancer just aren't really that much tankier than anything else. An endgame shop-equipped Ninja actually has better equipment with things like Thief hats and Black Garb. Ninja gets +2 speed, immunity to don't move/act and immune to stop. A knight in equivalent gear (crystal) gets +10 HP from the armor, and +20 from the helmet. Wow... its fucking nothing.jpeg. Armor licks nuts in FFT.

That goes for Jobs and abilities. Samurai's skillset sucks on samurais, but is fucking brokenly strong on Black Mages.

I think I played around with the idea where you could have secondary and tertiary action abilities, where you'd get reduced effectiveness.

>Primary Job Ability: 100% effective
>Secondary Job Ability: 80% effective
>Tertiary Job Ability: 50% effective.

This is just makes it so you can customize, but doing so makes it innately less powerful than a raw class' abilities.

Less classes that are more diverse is actually preferred I think. I'd take 10 distinct jobs over 20 that have a lot of overlap.

Obviously power balance is huge like I've said. You don't want shit that's brokenly overpowered.

Obviously FFT has a lot of "easy" enemies. It's full of stuff like archers and knights for the entire runtime, and only rarely do you encounter anything stronger than those.

I also had the idea of "variant" classes, which is basically just choosing slight bonus/downside. Like, if you had knights, you could choose the subclass Defender, which would get maybe 20% increased defense.
>>
>>380799738
TO LUCT sort of addresses a lot of this, not to say that it has its own issues as well. But it's a harder game, for better or worse.
>>
>>380797075

You'll realize how retarded you sound once you realize that the entire plot of FFT never actually happened according to what was recorded in actual history in that world.
>>
>>380782997
I'll probably get called a casual or shitter for this but I would like a spiritual successor that moves beyond the rigid grid based structure. Games like this were being made for a while like Arc the Lad 3 and Gladius (I might have the name wrong on that one). Valkeria did this too, but the scale is a little too large and units move too far, I think they should keep the arenas small. I prefer the free movement.

Other than that keep the same basic structure and have it take place 20-30 years after FFT ends. No returning characters but a direct sequel taking place in Ivalice. Also make it a little more difficult to abuse the job system (but not impossible, that's always fun on 2nd and 3rd runs).
>>
>>380799882
Well, Terror Knights usually shit on anything that is vulnerable to the intimidation effect, and archers are OP as heck in every iteration.
>>
>>380797647
>more sidequests like that one where you return reis to human form
>more optional bosses
>artifacts that can be used in the game rather than just being trophies in the chronicles
>same goes to the wonders that you can actually travel to that place instead of just being some pretty picture with a story behind it
>balance the jobs because ninjas are just batshit broken
>rework special jobs of characters such as agrias and orlandeau so that it isn't just a bunch of cool abilities slapped onto the squire job
>no game over when you lose a non-important battle where no main character is participating in
>lower the rate at which monsters in your party shit out eggs, it's fucking annoying
>a good setting might be at the time of saint ajora until the formation of the church of glabados and ajora's disciples, or the 50 years war
>a better recruitment pool that isn't just full of squires
>balanced enemy encounter where you don't have to fight 20 FUCKING MONKS
>>
>>380799738
Honestly these are great ideas. Do you work in game design? If not you should seriously consider it.
>>
>>380800231
Im a filthy neet, but I studied game design. I was going to make a tactics game, but I think I'm leaning more to making a classic roguelike at this point, something similar to a Mystery Dungeon or Lufia 2 ancient cave.

I think making a good tactics game is insanely difficult. AI is a huge issue since if it's too easy, you steamroll the game, and if it's too hard you really frustrate a lot of people.
>>

>>
>>380800041
It takes a lot of investment to get a Terror Knight to be useful, Fearful Impact is ok but being the slowest class doesn't help them since targets are already engaged or even killed before a TK gets close. Lament of the Dead is really only useable with the sword that increases its AoE

For now, at least, there's only one type of mage that learns both originally offensive and defensive magic but specialize into one as they become stronger. I'll see what I can do for blue mages though. Also, as for writer, I've been doing all the research related to it, like books on warfare and papers on how the idea of prophets spreads. I even wrote about the effects of the natural geography, war, and trade on technological progress of different countries for my thesis to contribute to this. I appreciate the offer but I know this will take years.

I actually have only a few classes, but my system in mind combines jobs. So fighter with a mage leads to magically charged weapons. Mage with fighter allows use of short swords and more stronger armor. But, I want to add more jobs. And I'll play around with the idea of both ranged and melee at the same time.

>>380798431
The game has three parts. First is of a revolutionary trying to bring down the monarchy, second is of a Royal Guard serving the royal family, and third goes to the past to the first ruler that united the country. So that stuff will definitely be in the third part.

>>380798547
I was thinking of putting a mode that skips all cutscenes and story for those that only want gameplay. And I can do that too.

>>380799280
That hiring system is a great idea. As for generics that look different/have own opinion, I never really thought about that, but I'll see if I can think of something.

If Squeenix wasn't full of idiots and the local and online battle weren't cut from the game it would be a 10/10 and it still would be played nowadays.

>I was thinking of putting a mode that skips all cutscenes and story for those that only want gameplay. And I can do that too.
I actually meant I want to be able to speed up the gameplay. Sitting through turns takes forever sometimes.
>>
I would like to see the series get an X-Com style sequel with a hub, tech upgrades, etc.

I'm also making an srpg, but mixed with territory acquisition. For example, starting off in some state, and conquering the neighboring states until you control the whole country. Anyway, I wanted terrain/weather to play a role. I vaguely remember LUCT having weather, but all it amounted to was minor stat changes. What I envision is weather changing the terrain, like a flood widening a river that's normally easily crossable, stuff like that.

Definite yes to meaningful choices. I want to include missions that you have only one chance to do them or not, and they affect the ideas of actions of other characters. I want missions that force you to choose between helping one town or another. I was thinking of not including Phoenix Down-like items and instead you have to heal the fallen character in a number of terms before they die.

Making jobs balanced is something I feel that I'll be working on for a long while. My job idea was like this: physical, ranged, and magic have beginners, intermediate, and masters level. You can learn all beginners types, only two intermediate, and only one masters. The master level can then be combined with the intermediate. A master fighter with intermediate magic charges the weapon with magic. With intermediate ranged, the fighter can use short-range weapons along with their swords/axes/close range weapon. That's a basic example of it, but I'll play around with the action abilities idea.

Power balance I'll definitely have to consider for these jobs and how they combine. I like the idea of variants though.

>>380800087
While the game won't be exactly like FFT, those are all things I'll copy down. Special classes that aren't Squire+, better recruitment, and better enemy encounters I'll all keep in mind. I haven't thought about sidequests right now, but I'll make them varied.

he's already back at square making an FF14 raid, so it's a matter of contracting him officially for a real game

Just some anon that loves SRPGs. Once I get more done than just research, scene setting, and dialog, I'll start posting in /v/'s game dev threads. That'll be like another year though. Right now, I'm doing research, learning how to draw humans, learn the basics to game coding, and I have piano lessons lined up for next week so I can get into music. I want to do it all, even if it takes years. And it will.

>>380802896
The third section of the story basically starts off with uniting the western third of the country. Then the would-be ruler marches to the East, uniting through trade, agreements, and war. Small skirmishes occasionally rise up that need to be put down or you lose favor and strength. I originally didn't think about weather, but I read Clausewitz's writings of warfare in marshes and during floods last night, so that's something I might actually consider.

Btw, a comment from the gallery of this pic:

>2. When asked about the subject of romance, the director(?) said they weren't able to give Ramza a love interest for the above reason, but if he had to pick someone for Ramza to be with, it would be Agrias.

If you're serious, you won't. Nothing kills off your enthusiasm for making a game that releasing it prematurely. Plus, the pressure mounts astronomically.

They don't mean more Tactics, they mean more XII or Tactics Advance. All the lore and knowledge from Tactics is not canon in Ivalice anymore.

I'd love if they made another tactics game and not the advance shit, but they've shown with two advance games that they'd rather roll around in their own shit than write another tactics game with a plot more serious than a ten year old reading a magic book.

Not really. They were imprisoned Espers who offered up their power to whoever could tame them. The in-game lore stated how they were all pretty much fallen gods who tried to start a rebellion and failed. Its been a while though so I can't say with 100% certainty.

Valkyria Chronicles had a good solution to the generic unit question

Everyone has a unique face and a shared body based on their job. They feel like they have personality because they comment on tons of small things during battles, but have no presence in story cutscenes, save for the 5 main characters.
You feel bad letting them die but not bad enough to reset
