I think it was mostly good timing. A lot of people who were getting tired of LoL, a lot of direct competition that was rising in popularity, etc. I wouldn't say he directly drove people to quit the game, but for a good amount of players he might have indirectly played a part.

There could be other factors playing into this, like Battlefield 1's recent release, but the point is that the CoD brand has recently taken a hit. If the next game doesn't sell like crazy again, I would imagine that Activision might consider pulling back on the franchise a little.
