Most of the PS4 library is inferior PC ports or remasters of stuff on PS3 or Vita and the exclusives are bland, interactive movies.

And yes home consoles are a sinking ship. Console unit sales have been declining for awhile due largely in part to the mobile gaming and PC becoming a cheaper investment over time for both casuals and hardcore video game enthusiasts. The PS4 has sold 60 million in its lifetime but it still has yet to pass the 80 million some odd sales of the X-Box 360. The best performing console of this generation has just barely managed to sell 20 million units less than the most underperforming console of last gen which was discontinued only somewhat recently. Not to mention that the PS4 has sold far less software units than its predecessor, which also much less hardware and software than its predecessor as well. And with the rising costs of producing games and royalties to third parties, profits aren't what they used to be in software. In Japan, the second largest market for video games, mobile gaming has dethroned home consoles and the PS4 only barely in 2016 managed to sell more than the Wii U in a market where X-Box is not even any competition.

The Switch is also a poor example as it is not even a home console and Nintendo has been controlling the supply carefully to make sure it does not incur losses from having surplus consoles that won't sell. It won't be until 3 years from now that we'll get some idea of the console's real reception. The Wii U sold out in many places in its first year too. But even if the Switch is slated to be a big success, this is by no means a strict home console and in fact compensates for its lack of power as a home console by being the most powerful handheld, which is one of its main selling points. The Switch's success, especially in Japan, is more a testament to the viability of handhelds.The most successful console this generation has been the 3DS after all.
