Shulk is mostly a training wheels character, yes he has added utility via Monado arts and fucking huge DPS through his low cooldown Backslash, but overall he's not very fun to play as the whole game long.
Luckily, the AI plays him alright (unlike how the AI plays Melia) but only if you TAKE BATTLE SOUL OFF HIS BAR. This is very important.

Experiment with playing as the other characters and find one you like, I ended up playing as Dunban set up as an Agi tank

That's another thing you should probably know, Agi tanking actually works in this game, and is probably actually better than normal Def based tanking.
That said, Dunban has a skill tree that's a noob trap.
He gets a bonus for not having any armor equipped at all, but this bonus is smaller than what you can get from just putting gems in your armor, and without armor it would mean you would instantly crumple if you ever ran into an enemy with an undodgeable attack.
Don't run naked Dunban.

People will tell you that Sharla is bad, she actually isn't that bad, mostly because Shield Bullet is really strong.
See, there's a mechanic where you can know enemy attacks before they happen and prepare for them accordingly.
When this happens, you can run up to any of your team members and have them use an art in response, even if that art just went on cooldown.

People will also tell you that the 7th party member is pretty good, she actually isn't that good due to low attack values on her weapons when compared to everyone else you might want to use as a damage dealer.

Melia is broken good, but only if you play as her.
