Mindless repetition is only good for developing reflexes. Mindlessly repeating something you see in a tutorial makes you predictable. The point is to understand why you must do what you do, and when.
As with any multiplayer game mode, getting styled on is part of the process. The question is not what you did wrong, but what your opponent did right.
Beyond that, its just the same as ever. Nothing is unfair (cheating aside, naturally). If it works, it works. If you are better at one aspect of the game, work on that first. Don't just react, but understand where the danger comes from and preemptively ensure you can deal with it.

The fundamental mistake is to believe you must do something specific to be succesful. I realise this is general advice, but it holds true for any game.

If you think knowing what and why automatically makes you some kind of MLG xXN00BR4P3RXx, then you would be sorely mistaken. I know what I have to do, and when I have to do it, I literally just can't do it. That is the problem, I can learn literally everything about something and still suck at it.
