Is Black Desert any good? I'm craving an MMO but I don't want to give Blizz any more of my shekels.
>>
>>380692130
No, it´s a Korean grindfest. Get FF14, the expac is about to drop
>>
>>380692130
I played it for about 4 months

It's pretty bad, the only thing it has going for it is that it's a sandbox, the models are gorgeous, and the character moves are pretty fluid, which gets completely nullified by horrible horrible horrible client optimization, all enemies being brain dead hp sponges, everything progress related being an RNG fest and I do mean EVERYTHING, and most of the community just being AFK fishing/cooking/training or any other activity that auto plays itself.

Notice I didn't even mention the cash shop, I don't consider the cash shop the main flaw of the game, which everyone and their mother will jump and scream about because they probably sucked at the game and though spending cash was the only way to progress in this game. It does give you a huge advantage, I had guildies who blew 2k-4k usd on microtransactions, then destroyed their gear and quit out of depression.

My main problem with the game besides optimization, is that at first it seems like it's a huge huge ocean of content, sometimes you're even afraid of trying stuff because you don't want to learn more stuff without learning what you were already doing before. But it's extremely shallow, every single activity turns into a mindless grind and has little to no variety to it.

Want to train horses? ok the only way to do it is by afking like 20 hours. Want to cook? well get your character in it's house and make him cook for hours, or chop wood, or craft potions. Want to level up? well go to the spot with the highest mob density you can clear in one spell rotation. Want to get boss loot? go sit in their spawn point for hours, and drop your game to 10 frames per second when 200 people show up, only to get crap from it. Want to fish? ok leave your character afk 6 hours fishing until his inventory becomes full. Want to pvp? well you can only kill 5 people before you go red and your gear starts losing levels when you die.
>>
Combat is amazing, but endgame is open world PVP and muh economic empire. If you plan on settling down prepare to spend like 30-50 dollars on pets for grinding and inventory/weight increases. If you ignore trying to be in the top 1% and just run around doing your own shit then I would recommend it.
>>
>>380692256
FF14 is basically a much improved WoW but it's still a horrendous grindfest. If you didn't like WoW or if you want something different, then don't get FF14.
>>
>>380693904
that sounds like Runescape and everyone loves Runescape
>>
so it;s not worth 5 bux, i dont wanna pay a sub and at least want a decent mmo.
>>
>>380692256
>I'm tired of playing WoW
>Hey anon, play this laggy WoW clone!
>>
>>380692130
it's the worst kind of korean grind fest with the worst rng in existence that will buttfuck you over and over

if you like that, go on and play it
>>
>>380692130
there's a ton of shit to do, sometimes it gets a little overwhelming to learn all the systems. You can get by with ignoring a large portion of it and just kill monsters and grind if you want though.

End game consists of: makin dat sweet money (which bots can do better), and fighting with other guilds over monster grind spots (for makin dat sweet money) (and xp)

dying costs you xp and money. you can get PK'd at any time anywhere outside cities if a player decides to flag up and try to kill you. dying to an enemy guild member when war is declared between the guilds no penalty is incurred besides a chance to break the gems you put in your gear which are pretty cheap
>>
>>380694372
It's worth more than 5 bucks easily, but just accept you'll get cock blocked a lot, it's very very different from WoW, you don't get instant gratification in this game unless you invest a lot into it, and if you want to get anywhere you'll have to leave your game running 24/7 on the background.

This isn't a game where you can catch up just by doing dailies and shit, every single hour not spent making money sets you, and there's people who have been playing since day one. Obviously catching up to most of the population will only take you like 3 months, but after that you'll start to question why are you even playing and keeping your PC resources low with this game in the background instead of doing something else entirely.
>>
>>380692256
>>380692130
>>380694321
Oy vey, yes be sure to buy Stormblood™ my young friend! Just purchase FFXIV:ARR™ for $20, Heavensward™ for another $20, and Stormblood™ for only $39.99!

Oh what's that? You don't want to spend a few hundred hours of going through old deprecated content, waiting sometimes on the upwards of an hour in duty finder for every dungeon in empty zones that nobody goes to anymore? Well lucky you, because now you can purchase the Tales of Adventure: A Realm Reborn and Tales of Adventure: Heavensward for the mere price of $20 and $25, respectively, and don't forget to pick up the Tales of Adventure for the class you want to play so that you can be instantly leveled to level 60 for the mere price of $25 dollars! Heck, we'll even throw in 300,000 gil for each of those just so you feel like you have the advantage you deserve.
>>
>>380694732
BDO isn't a game you should be playing competitively anyway so catching up to the population is pretty much meaningless.
>>
>>380693904
This was pretty much my thoughts on the game as well.
If you get it on sale it's not too bad, just don't even attempt the endgame unless you are a NEET or have money to spare for the cash shop.
>>
>>380697168
there's no endgame tho
It's a grind fest, not a wow clone
>>
Albion Online comes out next month, look into it. It's going to blow up on Twitch.
>>
>>380694712
It's fake complexity. There systems only seem deep and hard to understand at a glance because there are a bunch of arbitrary rules slapped on them all.

Once anyone spends a few weeks with the game they'll realize how fucking absurdly shallow and simple all of the game systems are. ESPECIALLY life skills
>>
What MMO is the true successor to Ragnarok Online? Tree of Failure didn't quite do it for me. It felt more flash than substance.

Top gear isn't so hard to get but you obviously have to work for it. Or farm money and buy it. Which is sometime easier since there's no RNG fucking you up with upgrade failure.
but with the amount of memory fragment we get now, this isn't' a big problem anymore.

>>380697924
Technically
Practically it's very hard.
I never managed to get any of the recent outfits since they merged the 3 server into 1.
>>
>>380695239
You can get ARR for $10, and Heavensward is included in Stormblood, which you can get for less than $40 online. The free trial is relatively unrestrictive as well.
>>
>>380692130

It's facebook timegating in MMO with bad combat and retarded cash shop. Everything is shallow and boring.
>>
>>380694321
>horrendous grindfest
It's really not. You can just do the main story quest alone and get to level 50 in your primary class. If you mean getting all jobs up, then of course it is. I can't think of a single RPG out there where maxing everything out doesn't involve grinding at all. The gathering/crafting jobs are really grindy, but there's several ways to speed them up so that they don't take very long, and there's no real need to do them anyway since you can rack up gil to just buy crafted gear incredibly easily without them.

It hasn't changed much since then

the game is super fucking broken and the fact that there are no level caps doesn't help
>>
>>380695239
Duty Finder doesn't take that long. Even on low pop servers, a DPS usually gets 5-15 minute queues in legacy content because of the daily roulettes. Tanks and healers still get insta-queues in legacy content with the longest times being around 5-10 minutes.
>>
>>380692130

If you're going to play MMO's just for the lewd you might as well just play Second Life.

If you are playing MMOs for the gameplay, first why the fuck are you doing that, and second your best bet is shit like DFO or something else odd and niche that doesn't have typical hotkey rotation bullshit.

If you're playing MMOs because you want a real virtual world experience where choices have consequences EVE is the only show in town for that in a meaningful way.

If you want player housing you play Wildstar, or again if you want to play doll house play SecondLife.

If you want to play WoW play WoW.
>>
>>380692130

How people keep getting tricked by KMMOs is beyond me. They've all been the exact same goddamn thing for the past 20 years. At least Lineage / Lineage II were honest about what they were. "grind for months and months in this boring bland environment and you too can participate in giant castle sieges"
>>
>>380699920
Not so much tricked as desperate. All western mmos are too busy attempting to clone wow and as such are boring as fuck.
The few that try to break the mold all have severe fuckups in other ways.
I can't wait for Secret World Legends, loved the quests, setting, and atmosphere in TSW.
>>
>>380699324
1v50 ranger video is outdated. Rangers are shit tier now.
>>
>>380692130
just spend the 10 dollar payment you'll own the game for life just log in once per day to get free shit.
>>
>>380700148
I want to be excited for TSW legends, but I'm sure microtransactions will kill it like they've killed every other f2p game.

Also I'm not so excited about doing the stupid zombie town and the stupid haunted carnival all over again. I made like 3 characters in different servers and with different loadouts and I'm so fucking tired of those zones already.
>>
>>380700386
SWL is the same shit as TSW and the combat is just as horrible.
>>
>>380692130
It's fine if you don't mind a rootkit being installed on your machine sharing everything you do with a data mining company.
>>
>>380700386
Yeah that would kind of kill that. I just dislike the first section in the zombie town, otherwise I've only ran through every quest once.

>>380700664
I'm kind of excited for the new skill system since I found the old one pretty damn boring after you finish your initial weapons out. I expect combat to be the same shit as always, hopefully it's changed just enough to get some RL friends to stick with it.

It's oddly comforting to know that in 30 years when WoW finally stops printing money that EVE Online and SecondLife will still be around as the only two MMO's to weather that whole shitshow due to having their own bizarre niches that nothing else could fill.

I wish Anet had some balls and had tried to make a real successor to the one other 'good' game in the genre.

what if OP wants something with fun gameplay instead of that tab targeting crap
>>
>>380701070
how far did you get? I started feeling overwhelmed in Egypt, the puzzles just became plain fucking absurd to solve without cheating, they expect me to fucking learn Hebrew and blindly guess all sorts of cryptic shit no one in their right mind would figure out by themselves. I kept hearing Transylvania was dope, but I just couldn't keep going it was too much.

For some reason I ended up liking the dragon faction the best, even though I thought they would be the kiddie edgy team. Which one did you play?

Are there any other MMOs where the graphics and UI aren't an eyesore? If I'm going to dump 30+ hours in a game per week I might as well okay something that looks good.
>>
>>380701505
I'll be honest, I would make an attempt and than usually look up the answer. I had a blast just experiencing the variety of puzzles and the story/world.
Templar all the way, their uniforms are sexy as hell.
>>
>>380701893

MMO's come in two flavors: desaturated bland as fuck looking "10 year old technology realistic" and super bright and cartoony "this will look passable forever" so pick your poison.
>>
>>380701649
I did, but I finished the story missions and then it lost the appeal (at that point there was only 2 seasons, not sure if the show is even running anymore).

I quit because the only way to progress was to do the "massive" events, and 90% of the time the server would crap itself, disconect everyone around me, freeze me and made me lose all I had done and not getting out of it.

I kinda liked it actually, just didn't feel like it had anything else going on for me, it had no end game besides those events, pvp was stupidly broken and insignificant, and just random generated map markers didn't feel interesting at all to clear.

Has it changed much since then?

>>
>>380701505
Oh and to add on my other reply, I completed everything except for Tokyo. That came out after I'd already moved on and I couldn't get back into the swing of things again.
Egypt got kind of old with cultist quests, although the Cairo issue was pretty fun and I got the snazzy indy outfit. Transylvania had an interesting variety of quests again and it's always fun seeing how screwed the Orochi get.

>>
>>380702490
>I've been convinced to never touch it.
why?
>>
>>380702490

There's a pretty solid school of thought out there for MMO's that goes like this:

The more an MMO advertises how good it looks and how much you can do with character creation the worse it will be in terms of gameplay, general design, and progression. There is no reason why art design and game quality should be linked like that but it seems like all the truly great MMO's UO, EVE, EQ, WoW (shut up), Lineage, etc... are pretty fucking ugly and limited when it comes to graphics and character design. There are some outliers here or there.

Honestly now is not a great time to invest in MMO's the genre is getting assaulted from all sides by open-world single player games, mobas, hybrid FPS/MMO shit like Destiny, and the WoW crowd realizing that they don't actually like MMOs, just WoW.

FFXIV, like SWTOR is a game living in another game's shadow and has players because it plays it ridiculously safe and has a marketable IP behind it. like Lotro before them they won't stand the test of time well.

GW2 is its own thing and people really love it or hate it.

Wildstar is in a similar boat, shockingly cartoony WoW-type thing with player housing and a different combat system.

EVE / Secondlife are two sides of the same "true online world" coin, one is a space ship game that is so boring that it's inhabited by bored out of their gourd middle management and accountants that delight in their virtual shekel counting, and the other is essentially what 4chan would look like if you visualized it in glorious 2003 - 2017 anything goes 3D (lots of porn).
>>
>tfw player controlled economy
>its shit
fuck when will their ever be a fantasy MMO game that is Eve online like?
>>
>>380703638
I don't know why, but i failed at Second Life so hard, I would never find people to do shit with.

I would open some sort of channel browser or whatever, and see where people is, teleport there and all I saw were people idling for some stupid tokens to trade for stupid items made by randoms.

But everything was empty, I only met people in the starter zone, and all they wanted to do was fuck, and they were pretty bad at fucking anyways, I didn't have any sex animations or whatever you get to fuck.
>>
>>380702853
Partially /v/ (memeing?) and advice from friends who played the game.
>>380703638
Thanks for the run down, I guess I'll stick with destiny 2 since it's coming to PC. I just hate how Bungie is getting rid of the new subclass trait system and armor stat allocation. Really dumbs down the game and it was already extremely simple.

>>
>>380704253

Second Life is not kind to people that are just sort of aimless, like any true sandbox you get out of it what you put in. If you want to just crank out your own porn you need to drop some $ to make yourself look presentable, find all the tools and places to make what you want, and be charismatic enough to entice others to RP out your weird ass fantasies with you. It isn't easy but it is very rewarding if you put in the time.

And of course there is plenty else to do in SL, but the whole virtual sex thing is easily what the majority of people are there to do.

Lots of SL is empty because again it's a sandbox, it isn't a purpose-designed environment meant to channel people from zone to zone with an even population distribution. 90% of the space in SL is just people's private little spaces that they often aren't in. But if you know where to find people (which takes time) you will always find lots of people. SecondLife has more monthly players than EVE or SWTOR, it's a well populated game.
>>
>>380704204

Probably because people would expect some gameplay in a fantasy MMO. EVE's playerbase is perfectly happy that the game is mostly a free market stock exchange simulator with occasional capital inflow / outflow in the form of static mostly per-determined battles that play out like a game of battleship.
>>
>>380704658

Guild Wars is without a doubt the most underrated MMO there has ever been.
>>
>>380703638
But FFXI stands the test of the time as it's still going and still profitable for SE.

FFXIV 2.0 is like 4 or so years old now. So I'm not entirely sure how you can compare it at all to SWTOR or say it's living in another game's shadow.

That anet is gone, anon. They got replace by fat bitches and transfag that dont know how to balance WvW
>>
>>380706795

It's pretty simple actually, It's a 14 year old game, all of the communities have come and gone and come again and congealed into their own little private domains, the intro experience doesn't teach you anything and Linden Labs, the company that keeps that shit running isn't going to give you any pointers on where to go engage in crazy kinky RP.

Here's a tip, go to the website, login with your SL login credentials, hit up the search bar and type in "Heavy Bondage Club" the first result is an always popular bdsm place, might find someone there to chat with and get the ball rolling, but again Second Life is 90% a social game, if you're not prepared to be friendly and polite you might as well just beat off to H-games.
>>
>>380707314

Yeah you're preaching to the choir, I used to chat with the Anet dev's quite a bit back in the day and I was an alpha tester for GW2. Between GW2 being an anti-guild wars and Wildstar's dev team completely fucking up what was going to be a really charming fun MMO I have just about run out of all optimism for the genre.
>>
>>380707351
remarking that it's a social game was not necessary, like did you even read what I wrote? I could not not find ANYBODY, ANYWHERE, how am I supposed to be social by myself?

Some constructive tips then

- Unless you go into your preferences and disable the settings that relate to how your in-game camera displays people will know when you are looking at them, so either figure that out or watch what you're doing with it, people find it rude if your camera is just hovering on them without you saying anything.

- If you haven't put any money into your avatar don't expect a lot of attention to be given to you, you'll have to reach out and explain that you're new and looking to get started.

- Expect to drop $10 - $15 if you want to look like something from a semi-modern video game, fun toys and outfits and animations will cost more

- All sex animations are tied to furniture or HUD's, you can right click, select a chair and sit on it and it will probably have an animation menu that you can pick through. Some older furniture will generate these floating balls that you have to sit on instead to start animations.

- If you plan on playing for awhile it's worth getting a better client than the default one, the best one is http://www.firestormviewer.org/

- Another good location to start at would be "The Cage Club" if you don't find what you're looking for at HBC

- Happy hunting.
