What's the best lockpicking mechanic in games and why is it Oblivion's?
>>380681715
>get skeleton key
Heh, not such a great mechanic now, huh?
Two worlds 2's lock-picking was the most thrilling.
Splinter Cell
I missed Oblivion's the first time I ran into a lockpick in Skyrim.
Then I actually liked Skyrim's. Was well done.
>>380682119
i really enjoyed Two worlds 2 + expansion, never played the first one. I was a summoner mage dude. Summoning a hoard of dead knights was fun. It's a must play.
>novice ingame skill level but experienced player could unlock every thing with one lockpick
>come Fallout 3's lockpicking
>picks will snap instantly if you randomly pick the wrong spot to tease
>lockpicking skill just locks you out of harder locks completely, don't even get to try them
>lockpicking skill doesn't make it easier to lockpick
Oblivion's is very good. Was very feel oriented, like a mobile good game. In fact, someone should make that
>>380681715
>that click
satisfying as fuck
Oblivion is pure vidyakino my lads
The sooner you realize it's the best TES, the better
>>380681715
Two.... >>380681923 Yeah, this.
LUCKILY Oblivion has a mod that 1:1 ports this minigame. It's fucking amazing.
it's literally the easiest version of lock picking in any game
>>380681715
the one that makes it dependent on a lockpicking stat so that it barely interrupts gameplay because lockpicking minigames suck
>>380681715
Any game where lockpicking isn't a minigame that gets boring after the third time
Sleeping Dogss had like 4 different lock picking mechanics and all were pretty solid.
>>380685791
And what games are those?
>>380685946
Any game where lockpicking isn't a minigame
>>380686113
You mean you just push a button and the door opens?
Sounds fun.
>>380686383
Yes, it is pretty fun.
>>380686383
>tedious minigame vs. just clicking a button and being done with it
F3/NV and Skyrim are the worst at this. the minigame is so fucking piss easy, especially skyrim since there is no limit to what lock levels you can attempt, that it is imposible to fail unless you have like 3 lockpicks
if it was morrowind style, click button, checks to see if you have the skill level, and just does it automatically, that would be great
fuck tedious minigames that offer no real challenge, just time wasting
Oblivion's lockpicking mechanic would be better if you didn't have to use the god awful mouse controls for it on pc.
bioshock one is amazing
>>380686383
based retard
>>380683175
snapping instantly is wrong, it's only even close to that on a very hard lock
higher skill also makes lower level locks easier, so you're wrong there as well
>>380686943
god this was so fucking dumb, i just want to explore an underwater city not play some newgrounds flash game every few minutes
>>380686943
fuck no it was the worst part of the game
endgame safes could and usually would be impossible to solve, and by the time you realized it you had a very small window to exit out before failing
I pity anyone who played this with a controller
>>380687281
there are several upgrades to make this minigame easier
>>380687281
I played on PC and even the worst safes were piss easy if you had just one or 2 plasmids to reduce the speed and remove some alarm plates
people just love to complain and don't even play the game properly
>>380681715
Oblivion's is baby's tier lockpicking.
>>380686113
Morrowind
>>380687521
and it didn't matter because if you had enough broken pieces there would simply not be enough tiles to solve it
nevermind the fact that the game itself is tedious and a waste of time at any difficulty, 2's hacking is infinitely better
Gothic 2
>>380687640
Game?
>>380687847
Hillsfar, an old DOS RPG.
I really liked Alpha Protocol's lock picking and hacking minigames but they are pure cancer if you are playing on a keyboard
>>380681923
This
>>380687682
Yes, that's one of the games with better lockpicking than Oblivion
>>380687682
It's so easy to break the lockpicking in Morrowind. Spellmaking is so broken.
ones that are just a skill roll.
fuck minigames
>>380686943
That puzzle looks based on an old shareware game i played when i was in elementary school. im 32
The most annoying minigame in existence.
>see locked door/chest/console
>go to console
>unlock
Everytime. Am I the only one?
>>380688593
yes
>>380681715
Oblivion's lockpicking like the game itself is overrated
>>380688593
It's called Pipe Dream.
>>380686943
I loved having to break pace everytime I found a safe
>>380685065
For what it's worth, lockpicking is easy in real life too
>>380686943
When I played it I once came across one which was literally impossible to solve. That kinda sucked.
>>380688665
Cheating is wrong
>>380686943
I unironically love this minigame
>>380689180
not really, unless you are picking some super cheap lock or are not on a time constraint. I bought a lockpicking kit with a clear lock online a while back, and it is actually quite tough.
>>380689442
Lockpicking/hacking are useless skills. I'd rather cheat than waste my time upgrading worthless skills.
>>380684452
mod name?
>>380686943
It was cool but it was way too time consuming
>>380681715
>Friend thought minigame was impossible
>Comes over to visit and I'm finish up oblivion
>Have a mod that hides the tumblers from view
>His face when
>>380687640
Quaff a potion? Y/N
>>380681923
This without a doubt is mechanically the best part of two worlds two. It works so well one PC or even console.
I still like this too>>380681715
>>380689529
Most locks IRL actually are super cheap. Me and my high school buddies used to pick locks on school doors, apartments, and random buildings all the time for fun. It was pretty rare to run into one that we couldn't pick in less than about 2 minutes, but when we did it was usually a nicer lock on something we would've gotten in real trouble for getting into.
>>380681715
>use an open lock spell instead
nice mechanic
>>380689721
lop ear mini
>>380690469
i meant the one regarding the lockpicking
>>380683175
>i never played the game: the post
>>380690552
kek my bad
http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/41486/
make a backup of your menus folder in case you fuck your shit up.
>>380690916
ty m8
i loved the cancerous RNG lockpicking in skyrim, where you broke about 50 lockpics to get through 1 master lock which had a pixel perfect sweet spot just to get 20 gold worth of shit.
coupled with the most useless skill tree, man skyrim was a steaming pile of shit
>>380691059
>lockpicking skills
>just makes lockpicking easier since locks don't require the skill to be leveled
>lockpicks cost a paltry sum
>focusing on speech instead lets you make them less expensive and get more money with which you can buy more lockpicks anyway
I'm convinced that Skyrim wasn't actually playtested at all beyond starting the game up and making sure it could run.
>>380688604
Just play one a controller, its really not that fucking hard
>>380681715
Diablo 2's lockpicking system was revolutionary.
>>380681715
Deus Ex HR's was pretty fun
Thief 1 and 2
>not a dumb mini game
>doesnt freeze time and can actually get caught doing it
>>380681715
>What's the best lockpicking mechanic in games
none of them
minigames that are tied to a game mechanic are trash
>>380686943
Mafia 2s were fun and had great sound
>>380686943
I don't usually say this, but please consider suicide.
I played this piece of shit when I was 3 years old.
>>380681715
I remember this-my dad could never get the hang of it, so he'd ask me to do it for him.
>>380692639
NO MAFIA 3 WAS THE BEST
>>380684093
there is an oblivion mobile game.
and i'm not talking about smart hpones.
Alien Isolation's hacking was neat. Pretty easy, but I'd say that's attributed to the fact you're under pressure since it's in realtime. I also liked how in stayed in theme with the retro sci-fi.
>>380693061
Oh baby. That was my jam.
>>380689670
Yeah I agree. I also don't level up my combat skills either and just open up the console and type kill whenever I see an enemy. There's no reason to level up those useless skills when I can just instakill everything.
>>380696364
That's the correct way of playing shitty bethesda games
Lmao at cucks who think they got a rare weapon or armor
>>380681715
not lockpicking but basically the same. Everyone that i've met that dislikes it doesn't actually know how it works. I find it so fun that I even have a minigame for it on my phone.
