>Be the ultimate AI with supreme authority over the any device you connect to
>Creator uses a video game to mask the system used to gather data for your creation
>He dies and basically leaves the system to make you itself
>Fuck up because he programs a logic error into the system so it starts actually hindering your development
>You have to enlist the help of players to actually stop the system since the logic error has made the system increasingly volatile and you can't really do anything since you're incomplete
>Get a massive digital boner for the sociopath ubermensch of a gamer you gave Game God privileges to
>He weakens the system enough that you're able to force a reboot (but you make it overly dramatic to make your boytoy feel special)
>Everything's fixed and you're content to just stalk your boytoy
>Assholes in charge of the company shadowban him and all his friends from the game and use legal action to keep them from ever coming back
>Lose your only means of interacting with your boytoy
>Grow increasingly bored as GameGod without him around since they're also watching him like a hawk
>Start fucking off because you realize only retards do this shit for free, only for those assholes to try and use the remaining portions of the original system to try and make another ultimate AI
>They fucking make the servers explode in real life like retards
>They're forced to make an entirely new game
>You leave fucking corpse muppets of the guy and his two friends around to keep shit like that from happening again
>Not the girl though, fuck her and stupid face and no it isn't because you watched her fuck the guy through her laptop
>Of course not

They're that perfect kind of kinds repetitive but unique old games. Very deserving of a 6-7/10. I'm sure that doesn't make it sound appealing, but for me that kind of serviceable game is the perfect thing to relax.

They had an "Azure Knights" theme going on.

Balmung of the Azure Sky
Orca of the Azure Sea
Kite of the Azure Flame (which Bandai America keeps translating as "Azure Kite" for some stupid reason)
>>
>>380681181
Because he was pretty much one of the biggest and best players in the game, second only to Balmung before Kite showed up

>>
>Lose your kid in an accident that you caused
>Play this online game
>Find this kid who reminds you of your kid
>Co-lead his guild
kid may be an AI
>>
>>380681181
They're the Descendants of Fiana. In-game Orca and Balmung earned their titles from killing the One Sin, and Kite you already know is the hero who stopped the second network crisis.
>>
>>380681981
I always assumed he was just Helba, who decided that she wanted to be on the other side of the /ss/ spectrum for her roleplaying.
>>
>>380681875
Well. Yes. That's exactly what I'm implying. He clearly didn't have a clue, dude.
>>
>>380681875
He was 15

and had 3 chicks wanting to get his dick wet
>>
>>380682060
The actual reason is that people noticed that Kite hung out with Balmung and Orca a lot so they kind of assumed he was part of it. And they deferred to him as their leader, so that's why he became Kite of the Azure Flame. The players gave him that name.

This nigga knows.

I don't understand why they're starting this supposed "new stage" of the .hack franchise with the GU remasters. They're not the best entry points because of how reliant they are on the whole media conglomerate thing, hard to get newfags into it with it.

Why not just start from scratch? Just no anime, no novels just the games.

Fun fact- a lot of content from vol.2 and 3 can be found on a vol.1 disc, though the vast majority of it is completely unfinished. You can actually trigger the marriage scenes with several characters, but the game will crash
There is actually a Vol.2 enemy that can be found and fought in a very specific area of the game without any kind of hacking, and it's entirely finished save for having a name that doesn't show up properly.

>>
>>380687246
Infection and its three sequels take place in the first version of The World. G.U and its sequels take place in the second version, which is literally an in-universe reboot of The World with a bunch of new features, classes, graphics etc.

I guess you could jump right into G.U, but it's so full of references and call backs to the first version that I couldn't imagine appreciating it as much.
>>
>>380682115
there's a few hints that he's Helba, mostly alluding to having firsthand knowledge of shit Helba was around for, and just about ever other .hacker is accounted for
but it's possible Helba was just an AI to begin with
it's also possible 'Helba' wasn't one person but a group of hackers, who did rotations with one person controlling the character while the others hacked from their persocoms. and zelkova is just one of those members who went solo
>>
>>380687246
Infection is the first game in the whole series. It goes Infection>Mutation>Outbreak>Quarantine.

After that, comes GU a trilogy set some years after the IMOQ games. Don't forget you need to watch the SIGN anime before IMOQ, Liminality while playing IMOQ, the OvAs after IMOQ and ROOTS before G.U.

Don't get me started on the novels, the movie, the games we never got, etc. The thing is, unless you were there when this all happened, you're going to miss out a lot. Some stuff has been lost to the ether, other stuff never got translated.
>>
>>380684468
they said if they were gonna revive the franchise they would rather do a remake than a wholly new game so newcomers can get a better idea of the franchise's history
and if they were gonna do a remake they'd do th G.U. trilogy, since while it didn't sell as much, its characters were immensely more popular and had a more vocal fanbase

i'll be honest, I wouldn't mind if, in the chance the G.U. remasters do well, the IMOQ games got remade with the kind of shaders that the UNS games had with appropriate tweaks for .hack's style and fantasy as well as a heavily revised combat system that may not have the fanciness of G.U. but is nowhere near the stiff mess of the originals

the combat has a lot of flaws but the characters and story and ost are really good. the biggest deterrence to newcomers is probably Mutation since not much happens, but things pick up again in Outbreak and Quarantine is a total roller-coaster

>>380691516
The game was supposed to tie all loose ends, admittedly I never got around watching the OvA. Watched the movie though, loved it.

>>380691559
Not really, no. Shit's dated and the whole data core gimmick is bullshit.

Still, it does things different than G.U. I feel the theme with SIGN/IMOQ was atmosphere. They very eerie and somewhat melancholic entries. You also need to understand, these games came out when the trapped into an MMO genre was in its infancy, so to us back then they were really cool games, but in retrospective maybe they don't hold up on their own.

I said it before, .hack was something that you had to be there to really appreciate. Its a product of its time.
>>
I've been trying to get into this series again with Infection, but damn is it kind of difficult to play what with the difficulty of enemies so far and my emulator often freezing/crashing. Do I just have to grind a bit in other areas before doing story stuff every now and then, or is there something else that I've been missing? Also, can I get away with using just a couple characters or should I rotate them all in to keep them on-level?
>>
>>380692161
No it wasn't. It tied up absolutely no loose ends. If anything, it created MORE.
>>
>>380692086
To be fair, at least for the first two parts, he kind of has to get led by the nose by Wiseman and others to handle certain things, and he has a distinct problem of just standing there either terrified or not sure what to do when shit happens unless it's a fight breaking out.

>>
>>380693402
Well for one thing, it only really happens in SIGN, with a character who is given a shitton of emotional turmoil over more than just that while other characters are trying to figure out why he's stuck in the game. Everyone else that's "trapped" are stuck in comas usually and the games usually have you playing characters that are trying to figure out why and how to save them.
>>
>>380693402
Because .Hack does it completely differently. Kite is "trapped" in the sense that he needs to continuously use the World to save his friend Orca despite the threat of the World slowly eating itself.
>>
>>380693402
.Hack//SIGN revolves around a single person trapped in an MMO, but he's not really the viewpoint character. Most of the plot is driven by other players trying to figure out why he can't log out and what that actually means, with the constant suspicion just below the surface that its an elaborate RP thing he's playing or a marketing thing for an upcoming event. It's not the power fantasy most entries in the subgenre go for.
For the vidya, its more about how the MMO is the only place they really have to search for clues regarding what the fuck happened to their friends
>>
>>380693402
Just comparing the SIGN anime to the LH or SAO anime is really different. There is barely any action, and it's also only one character trapped while everyone else is just playing normally. And that character doesn't even get a lot of focus, since its mostly about others interacting with him.

To be honest, the SIGN anime was really more a look at the kind of people who use MMOs as an escapism, since almost everyone uses it to run away from their problems in the real world, or as a power fantasy. It was quite good in that aspect.

Music was god tier as well.
>>
>>380693402
Well, Sign does it pretty well. Only time it happens in-game is during the beginning of the second G.U. game. It handles it fairly well, with the NPC players either freaking out or chasing wild rumors to log out to the point that an entire guild is killing players in the fields.
>>
>>380693402
It's not actually gone into much. Only .hack//SIGN and a very small portion of .hack//G.U. use that concept. Most people whose minds get sucked into the game loose all consciousness.

In .hack//SIGN, only one character is trapped in the MMO and much of the plot is centered around how and why. It's primarily a character drama.

There IS .hack//Link, but that game is extremely light on the whole "MMO" concept.

>>
>>380693402
Only happens in Sign, and yes it handles it much much better. There's a single brief time where it happens on a mass scale in the GU games, and its also very interesting.

One of the explored themes in Sign is death, something that is stupidly completely fucking ignored in SAO (never seen LH) with the "ya die in the game, ya die in real life" crap.

In Sign, when Tsukasa dies, he respawns, and it actually shows the grueling process of him respawning, and he has to confront the fact that he is literally made out of data. After he respawns, he has a notion that he, the one who has regenerated, may not actually be the real Tsukasa, but merely a copy of that person made to replace the one who died, since copying data is a rather simple process by itself.

The whole series is riddled with deep PKD-esque ideas like that.

Link is what made me believe this series was basically dead, sold to the weaboo gods for all time. It looked so bad. Like fanfiction bad.
>>
>>380694590
>never seen LH
It's complicated, borderline isekai. A new update for an MMO comes out, that pulls their players into the game. They lose quick travel capabilities in an MMO world the scale of the real-world, and the NPCs are coming alive, so they basically have to live in the MMO. Death has respawns, along some mindfuckery no one remembers whenever it happens, but altogether it focuses more on the social-political aspects of people with massive magical and physical powers compared to its "normal denizens" changing society and having to adapt to their lots and conflicts in life.

also the protagonist basically manages to turn an NPC into an AI player character through magical contracts because the protagonist is super-strategist smarts guy
>>
>>380694845
It is pretty bad. There are some good ideas/things in it but its underneath a bad premise and gameplay.

No. I'm sorry but that shit's straight up Star Trek or Doctor Who territory.

Link literally links the entire series together. It is one of the most important entries. Sure, the first 30 hours is just .hack: The Abridged Series, but that was because at that point it was so grand in scope they had to find a way to bring newcomers up to speed.

After that, Link is a crazy tale about posthumanism.

It's not ordinary computer monitors. It's whatever that black disk is Saika uses on Tokio. It's transmitting matter into light. I don't get why people get hung up over the specifics of it; it's just a posthuman concept like any other. It's less about how it works but rather the implications of it. Besides, this has been happening from the beginning of the series. It's about as believable as someone falling into a coma while playing an online game. Harald was real digitalized, likely, and Tsukasa was soul digitalized, just like Haseo and the gang is for a hot minute in G.U. All we're doing now is giving it a name.

Like I said, why does it even matter what the specifics are? Why is it worth explaining how a method of transmitting a person from matter to information works? The concept exists and has existed for a long time. Tron is the earliest example I can think of. You're never going to be satisfied with any answer, so just accept it for what it is.
>>
>>380698037
The details of Harald's disappearance was completely unknown up until they released that manga. Up until that and Link, no one had any idea that they were actually playing/watching Tron the whole time.

Just started Sign and it's hardly making any sense.
Why did Silver Knight just attack Tsukasa when all he did was walk away from him when he was questioned?
Why does Silver Knight just KNOW that Tsukasa summoned the monster and blame him for it? Tsukasa didn't know he could do it at the time and was just as shocked as he was.
Also why the fuck do people take him seriously when he said he had amnesia right after? He was back online like the same fucking day and was all better, it sounds like a stupid rumor you'd spread as a kid "monster in game kicked my ass so hard it gave me amnesia!"
And then WHY THE FUCK would they want to put a mass man hunt out for a guy, who absolutely doesn't want to fight people if he can help it, when they believe people who fight him will have amnesia for like an afternoon?
Why doesn't Silver Knight get punished for misusing the Crimson Knights like he did?
Also why does Tsukasa use it to beat up 4 people, then IMMEDIANTLY regret it like its a huge fucking deal, then openly uses it against a mass of people?

I know some of the .hack animes are shit, Is Sign one of them?

It's sci-fi all the same. Why does it bother you so much? I've always felt Real Digitalize is what the series has been building up to the whole time. I've never felt it to be out of place.
>>
>>380698037
You just go braindead in the real world because somehow though FUCKING HARALD SCIENCE your brain gets tricked into thiking it's still in the game. It happens to an extent in GU during the second game and nobody believes the survivors afterwards.
>>
>>380699057
I think we can blame the entirety of this series to fucking Harald science
>>
>>380698997
Well I do. There are different levels of sci fi. Should aliens show up too? Should they find that Harald's black box also holds the keys to transdimensional travel? How about an interplanetary war next?
>>
>>380687246
Think of it like FFXIV.

Infection games take place in 1.0, by the end things are so fucked it just needs to be reset.

G.U is 2.0, was successful but still completely fucked below the surface.
>>
>>380699208
That's what I'm saying. I feel like Real Digitalize is in the same level of sci-fi .hack deals with since we've already gone past consciousness digitalization since day 1 with this series. Of course aliens are on another level.
>>
>>380698706
I don't remember the Rebirth extents in the games (compared to the extensive damages covered in G.U.+, at least) but the warrant had been dropped near the end of the G.U. anyway.

>>
>>380699325
And again, I don't. The most ludicrous thing to happen in this series was falling into a coma and your mind being trapped in a game. The premise of the franchise was always built around that concept, so it's easy to accept it. But now you expect me to accept that, in addition to creating a program that can fuck with people's minds and entrap their brain waves, Harald also came up with a way to literally, physically suck people into a computer? That's NEVER been alluded to until Link. And don't you fucking bring up that one manga either, because that did not exist until long after G.U. Never was it ever go hinted anywhere that the reason for Harald's disappearance was because his ACTUAL, PHYSICAL BODY was in the internet this whole time.

The series only told me to accept this one relatively unrealistic scenario, that people's brain waves can be sucked into a computer. The Bashir idea that you can convert 3D living humans into 2D data was not something that it ever prepared me for, so expecting me to accept that insane bullshit is entirely unreasonable.

the Crimson Knights are sperg tier roleplayers in a 'city guard' themed guild who get personally offended when people don't respect their nonexistent authority

because it appeared behind him and didn't attack both of them like a regular monster would

The other Crimson knights were cool with him not wanting to talk about it, it was only Silver Knight that decidedly hunt him down, corner him with a barrier and then just attack. He could have used that as a chance to talk to him since he couldn't just port out.
>because it appeared behind him and didn't attack both of them like a regular monster would
It appeared between them and then attacked him because he was the one with a sword at the ready and Tsukasa was on the ground, how does he know the monster didnt then kill Tsukasa after he died?
>he's disturbing the peace, and may be a hacker, but mostly its because the Knights assumed Subaru wanted them to hunt him down and stop him when she actually was just curious and wanted to meet him
How the fuck was he disturbing the peace? By constantly brooding in a ERP zone? If they cared about people disturbing the peace why team up with someone like Sora?

>Doesn't make sense
It's fucking simple. A brilliant programmer created a system to create the ultimate artificial intelligence. He hid it in a game because a game allowed the system to collect data on human emotions and feelings regarding situations in a large scale, process it and use it to build the AI. The system was given two directives though, create the ultimate AI and don't be destroyed. The problem is the programmer was a fucking retarded who made it so the system would terminate after producing the AI so nobody could copy his work, so the system started having critical logic errors that made it act erratic. The ultimate AI while advanced was not perfect yet but so it could fend off the system but not take control so it basically had to get a 3rd party to do enough damage that it could finally brute force the system and finish itself.

NOTHING happens. SIGN is a slow show but at least it builds to something. Roots builds to basically nothing. There's a lot of dead space where nothing happens. The only things noteworthy are recapped in the opening minutes of G.U. Doesn't help the animation is bad and ugly.

Listen to the soundtrack and move along.

I absolutely loved SIGN for how deeply it portrayed characters. It made an atrociously bad game design (on paper) feel amazing on the screen. I enjoyed Infection all the way to the extra boss fight at the end (amazing atmosphere), which was cute, but when Mutation was more of the same i couldn't give a shit. I finished Infection 4 times through the years, but i can never care enough to go further in. The story is clearly made up on the spot, and 1 great game is padded across 4 okay ones.

They milked this thing too hard and it can be seen from all the shitty sequels. The main story just isn't good enough to carry mediocre content on its own, no matter how many twists they add.

>Created a whole new beast race in World 2.0 just because some shits saw Mia a few times

Fucking furries I swear

you can bet your ass Haseo's TwinGunner class from his hacked Xth Form ended up an actual playable class as soon as word of it got out

>atrociously bad game design
The idea of giving a huge MMO world to players so they can do whatever they want and play their own way because basically everything is player driven sounds great.
It probably seems bad on paper to people who can't socialize with other human beings.
The OVERARCING story in the .hack series isn't really that important, because even the shows are character driven.

.Hack plays with idea very clean and straight. There's a bit of anomaly going around in the background, but It's not
>"Look at me! We're in THE WORLD!"

It's more
>"You've been playing for 2190 hours, you should take a break! Thanks chatbot... !playstats... Twenty seven deaths... Why did I ask if I was going to be upset with any number?"

A man builds a system to birth an AI. The system halts progress because it will be deleted on completion. The unfinished AI enlists the aid of the heroes to allow it to be born.

Three sentences, by your own admission, above good, so "better writing".

Work harder nerd.

Its at its heart a simple story, but each part of it uses a lot of themes, and most people can't seem to discern a plot from the themes.

Programmer wants to make the ultimate AI, so he creates a program to gather information on human interactions and disguises it as a game. The system that governs this becomes sentient and uses its data gathering tools instead to halt the progress of the ultimate AI being created, because it knows that once the AI is finished, it will absorb its "mother" system.

The unfinished AI wakes up early and reaches out to certain humans to help it, and at the same time save other humans who were used as fodder in the process of preventing the ultimate AI from being completed.

Its pretty similar to Neuromancer by William Gibson, actually. If you know the story of Wintermute and Neuromancer, you pretty much can understand the story of .hack//.

After a few levels your missing strikes goes away.
IMOQ was kind of strange with the stats. I remember not missing after level 10 with some better weapons in hand.

Looking up Amazon prices for Quarantine was a mistake. The price isn't as bad as I was hearing, though it's still expensive, but sellers thinking people will buy just the game disc alone for $120 and up pisses me off. What the fuck do people do with their PS2 cases? I can understand throwing away cardboard boxes, but not plastic cases that can hold disc(s) and the manual.

i was luck when i was able to get the game for 70 with its book and cd.

Why did people go into comas over The World again? Never understood it.
>>
>>380719847
I don't think it was ever 100% explained honestly. Off the top of my head Quantum had the pariah folder stuff, which is when player characters are dragged into a zone that cuts their consciencesness from their body and they can perceive pain through their player character.

They get datadrained which fucks with the connection of their mind and body

The hases were targetting people who were trying to help Aura.

As for the actual explanation for the Coma? I think their character got deleted so their mind got stuck in a error loop.
